The metrics of one routing protocol do not necessarily translate into the metrics of
another. For example, the RIP metric is a hop count. In such situations, an
artificial metric is assigned to the redistributed route. Because of this unavoidable
tampering with dynamic information, carelessly exchanging routing information
between different routing protocols can create routing loops.

Sometimes it becomes necessary to advertise some route using routing protocol
and still not to send any routing traffic out of interfaces. Classical example of this
is when we run OSPF over GRE tunnel interface. In this case, site routes are
advertised. To prevent routing protocol traffic in the site network, you can use
default interface command or else use route redistribution mechanism.

To prevent other routers on a local network from learning about routes
dynamically, you can keep routing update messages from being sent through a
router interface. Keeping routing update messages from being sent through a
router interface prevents other systems on the interface from learning about
routes dynamically. This feature applies to all IP-based routing protocols except
BGP.
To prevent routing updates through a specified interface, enter the following
command:
E

ALU(config-router ospf1)#passive-interface GigabitEthernet 7/0
Command (in RCM)
Description
passive-interface <interface-
name>
Enter this command in Router
Configuration Mode.
Suppresses sending of routing updates
through the specified interface.
