The Fluorolog
®
-3 spectrofluorometer requires very little maintenance. The outside panels
may be wiped with a damp cloth to remove dust and fingerprints. The lamp is the only com-
ponent that has to be replaced routinely. Regular examination of lamp and water-Raman
spectra serves as an early indicator of the system’s integrity. (These two tests are described
in Chapter 3,

Xenon lamp
Obtaining good spectral results depends upon the xenon lamp. After 1700–2000 hours of
use for the 450-W xenon lamp, the lamp output decreases significantly, indicating that the
lamp should be replaced. Replacing the lamp within the specified time may prevent system
failure. Jobin Yvon Inc. advises to keep a laboratory notebook near the Fluorolog
®
-3 to re-
cord lamp usage. Each time the lamp is turned on, it constitutes one full hour of use; there-
fore, Jobin Yvon Inc. suggests leaving the lamp on between brief periods of inactivity. Re-
cord the hours of use on the form in Chapter 9:
