Using an Alternate Terminal
If the system monitor is not working properly, you can use a
VT320 terminal set to 9600 baud as an alternate console.
Figure 2-2 shows how to connect an alternate terminal.
To connect an alternate terminal,
1.
Go to console mode to shut down system software, if
necessary. Refer to ‘‘How to Enter Console Mode’’ section of
this chapter for specific instructions.
2.
Turn off the system unit.
3.
Install a communications line adapter on the Serial Line 3
communications connector that is on the back of the system.
Refer to ‘‘How to Install a Communications Line Adapter’’
section of this chapter for more specific instructions.
4.
Insert the end of the VT320 cable into the communications
line adapter on the back of the system unit. Make sure
that the alternate keyboard is connected to the VT320.
5.
Turn on the alternate terminal.
6.
Turn on the system unit.
7.
On the regular keyboard, at the console prompt (
>>
) or
after approximately two minutes if no prompt appears, type
setenv console s
and press Return. The system then sets
the alternate terminal as the console. Even if the graphics
module doesn’t work and the console prompt doesn’t appear,
the regular keyboard should still work. See Appendix C for
information about the setenv command.
8.
If the regular keyboard does not work or the system does
not accept the
setenv console s
command for some reason,
proceed as follows:
Shut down the system unit.
Remove the graphics module. Refer to ‘‘How to remove
an option module’’ section in Chapter 5 for specific
instructions.
Connect the alternate terminal and keyboard.
Turn on the system unit.
