between two consecutive network elements. One of the network elements originates the
Line Overhead and the other terminates the Line Overhead. A Line span in the SONET
network has special significance as it is protected in case of equipment failure or
deterioration in performance. The transportation of information across a network Line
span will be maintained by switching to standby (or protection) facilities provided in case
of failure.
Line AIS
Line Alarm Indication Signal. An alarm signal generated when an error is detected in the
Line Overhead portion of the Synchronous Transport Frame. See also

Linear
(1.) Refers to the unit's ability to transmit APS functions for a Linear (span) network. (2.)
A Linear network refers to the design of a Local Area Network in which the wiring loops
from one workstation to another is structured in a linear direction (as opposed to a
Ring
Network).
Line B2 Error
The B2 byte is a parity code in the Line Overhead section of the Transport Overhead in
the Synchronous Transport Frame. It is even parity, and is calculated over all the bits of
the Line Overhead and STS-1 envelope capacity of the previous STS-1 frame before
scrambling. Used at the receiving end to determine if a transmission error has occurred
over the line.
Line FEBE
Line Far End Block Error. An alarm signal generated and sent upstream to the
transmitting Line Terminating Equipment, signaling that errors have been detected in
the data block at the receiving Line Terminating Equipment.
Line FERF
Line Far End Receive Failure. A signal generated and sent upstream that informs the
transmitting line terminating equipment upstream that the receiving equipment has
detected an incoming failure in the Line Overhead portion of the Synchronous Transport
Frame. See also

Line Frequency
The frequency of the transmitted signal on the network line, measured in megahertz
(MHZ).
