Negotiation is an Ethernet handshaking mechanism that looks at the incoming signal
and determines the link speed and duplex mode (full-duplex or half-duplex). The
Negotiate button enables or disables negotiation mode.
When auto negotiation is first enabled, it attempts to negotiate the link with a remote
device. After successful negotiation, negotiation will not be performed again unless the
remote device initiates an auto negotiation sequence.
By disabling auto negotiation, the test set can simulate older Ethernet equipment that
does not support auto negotiation logic.
The
Negotiate
setting is only available for 1G and 2.5G Optical Ethernet rates
and 10M and 100M Electrical rates.
To enable auto negotiation:
1. Select the
Packet
tab.
2. Select
Config
and choose
SET
.
3. If the current
Interface
rate (or
Mode
) needs to be changed, then configure the
setting for the desired rate.
4. Select
Negotiate
and choose
Enabled
.
•
When first enabled, the Status displays "Enabled" and "Pending link".
•
Upon successful negotiation with a remote device, the Status displays the
negotiated Interface Rate and Duplex mode.
To disable auto negotiation:
1. Select
Negotiate
and choose
Disable
.
•
When disabled, the Status displays "Disabled".
