F
808
Far End Block Errors. Count of E-Bit errors, which are SMFs in error at the far end, as
determined by a CRC-4 error.
FEC
FERF
Far End Receive Failure. A signal generated and sent upstream that informs the
transmitting line terminating equipment that the receiving equipment has detected an
incoming failure.
Flow Control
A method of using a particular character (XON and XOFF codes) for controlling when a
device sends (or does not send) data.
Forward Error Correction
Forward error correction (FEC) is a method of obtaining error control in data
transmission in which the source (transmitter) sends redundant data and the destination
(receiver) recognizes only the portion of the data that contains no apparent errors.
Because FEC does not require handshaking between the source and the destination, it
can be used for broadcasting of data to many destinations simultaneously from a single
source.
Because the decoder only uses the information received and never requests a
retransmission, the flow of data is always moving forward. The process is therefore
known as forward error correction.
FEC correctable and uncorrectable errors are inserted after the FEC wrapper is created.
