Preparation of block sample on aluminum sample plate
In the same way as described in “
Preparation of powder sample on aluminum
”, place the aluminum sample plate on the glass plate. Then secure
the sample in place using a compound. (See Fig. 8.2)
If the sample is small, make sure that the compound does not extend onto the
measurement plane; any compound on the measurement plane can diffract the
X-rays.

Preparation of powder sample on glass sample plate
The glass sample plate has a feature that the sample does not easily drop from
the plate and that it requires less sample material than the Al sample plate. If the
sample amount is sufficient, pour the sample on the indented section of the glass
sample plate and spread the sample evenly using another glass sample plate, so
the sample plate surface is aligned with the sample measurement surface. (See
Fig. 8.3) Be careful since if the sample surface is misaligned with the sample
plate surface, it will result in angle deviation.
Fig. 8.3 Preparation of powder sample on glass sample plate
If the sample amount is insufficient or if the sample does not stay in place, apply
a thin coat of binder on the back of the glass sample plate, then sprinkle the
sample on the binder-coated area and shake off excess sample. With this method,
halo from the glass or binder is observed and the attached sample is not even.
