Driving safety systems
In this section, you will find information
about the adaptive brake lamps and the
following driving safety systems:
앫
ABS (Anti-lock Braking System)
앫
BAS (Brake ASsist)
앫
BAS Plus* (Brake ASsist Plus)
앫
ESP
®
(Electronic Stability Program)
앫
EBV (electronic brake-power distribu-
tion)
앫
ADAPTIVE BRAKE
i
In wintry driving conditions, you will only
achieve the maximum effect of ABS, BAS, ESP
®
and ADAPTIVE BRAKE if winter tyres (M+S) are
used, with snow chains if necessary
.
ABS adjusts the brake pressure in such a
way that the wheels do not lock when you
brake. This allows you to continue steering
the vehicle when braking.
ABS works from a speed of about 8 km/h
upwards, regardless of road-surface condi-
tions.
ABS works on slippery surfaces, even
when you only brake gently.
Braking
You will feel the brake pedal pulsate if ABS
intervenes when braking.
If ABS intervenes:
왘
Continue to depress the brake pedal
with force until the braking situation is
over.
For full braking application:
왘
Depress the brake pedal with maxi-
mum force.
Driving safety systems
G
Risk of accident
The risk of an accident increases if you:
앫
drive too fast, particularly when corner-
ing and on wet or slippery roads
앫
drive too close to the vehicle in front
The driving safety systems described in this
section are unable to reduce this risk or
override the laws of physics.
You should therefore always adapt your driv-
ing style to suit the prevailing road and
weather conditions and maintain a sufficient
distance from other road users and objects
on the road.
ABS
G
Risk of accident
Do not depress the brake pedal several
times in quick succession (pumping). De-
press the brake firmly and evenly. Pumping
the brake pedal reduces the braking effect.
G
Risk of accident
You should always adapt your driving style
to suit the prevailing road and weather con-
ditions and maintain a sufficient distance
from other road users and objects on the
road.
The wheels may lock when braking if ABS is
faulty. This limits the steerability of the vehi-
cle when braking and the braking distance
may increase.
If ABS is deactivated due to a malfunction,
then BAS and BAS Plus* are also deactivat-
ed.
