Practical advice
Towing
Observe the legal requirements for the
country concerned when towing.
Having the vehicle carried away on a trans-
porter or trailer is preferable to towing it.
We recommend the use of a rigid towing
bar if towing is necessary.
!
Make sure that the electric parking brake is
released. If the electric parking brake is faulty,
release the electric parking brake manually
(
컄
page 497).
!
When towing, pull away slowly and smooth-
ly. Too much tractive force could damage either
of the vehicles. Do not use the towing eye for re-
covery purposes.
!
You may only tow the vehicle a maximum
distance of 50 km. A maximum towing speed of
50 km/h must not be exceeded.
The propeller shafts to the driven axles must be
removed if towing for more than 50 km.
!
On vehicles with KEYLESS GO, insert the key
into the ignition lock under the KEYLESS GO but-
ton and turn the key to position
0
.
Before towing the vehicle, make sure that
the battery is connected and charged.
Otherwise:
앫
you cannot switch on the ignition
앫
you cannot shift the transmission to
N
using the selector lever
You will have to use the ignition lock under-
neath the KEYLESS GO* button on vehicles
with KEYLESS GO* (
컄
page 257).
Tow-starting the vehicle is not permitted.
If the engine does not start, try jump-start-
ing it (
컄
page 525).
If it is not possible to jump-start the vehi-
cle, have it towed to the nearest qualified
specialist workshop, e.g. a Mercedes-Benz
Service Centre.
If the vehicle has suffered transmission
damage, only tow it with the propeller
shaft disconnected.
The ignition must be switched off if you are
towing the vehicle with the front/rear axle
raised. Intervention by ESP
®
could other-
wise damage the brake system.
Towing
G
Risk of accident
Have the vehicle towed using a rigid towing
bar if:
앫
the engine is not running
앫
there is a brake system malfunction
앫
there is a malfunction in the power sup-
ply or the vehicle’s electrical system
There is no power assistance for the steer-
ing and the brake system when the engine is
not running. You will then require considera-
bly more force to steer and to brake.
When towing or tow-starting another vehi-
cle, its weight should not be greater than the
permissible gross weight of your vehicle
(
컄
page 546).
The transmission is in position
P
when the
consumer battery is not connected.
