Applying the electric parking brake
automatically
Your vehicle’s electric parking brake is ap-
plied automatically if HOLD (
컄
page 325)
or Distronic Plus* (
컄
page 317) brings
your vehicle to a halt and at least one of
the following conditions is fulfilled:
앫
The engine is switched off.
앫
The driver’s door is opened and the
seat belt is not inserted in the buckle.
앫
The bonnet is released.
앫
The boot lid is opened while the auto-
matic transmission is in position

.
앫
The vehicle is stationary for a long peri-
od.
The red
!
indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster comes on.

In addition to the electric parking brake,
parking position
P
can also be engaged auto-
matically.
Emergency braking using the electric
parking brake
In an emergency, you can also brake your
vehicle while it is in motion using the elec-
tric parking brake.

Press the handle for the electric park-
ing brake while the vehicle is in motion
(
컄
page 289).

Your vehicle will be braked for as long as you
keep the electric parking brake switch pressed.
The longer you press the electric parking brake,
the more firmly the vehicle will be braked.
The red
!
indicator lamp in the instru-
ment cluster flashes during the braking
procedure, the
“Release parking brake”
message appears in the multi-function dis-
play and you will hear a warning tone.
If you have brought your vehicle to a com-
plete halt, the electric parking brake is
then applied.

lector lever to

With the key

Turn the key to position
0
in the ignition
lock (

page 257) and remove it.
The immobiliser is activated.
With KEYLESS GO*

Press the KEYLESS GO button next to
the steering column.
The engine is switched off and all the
lights in the instrument cluster go out.
The status of the on-board electronics
corresponds to key position

Stopping the engine

Risk of accident
Do not remove the key from the ignition lock
until the vehicle is stationary. There is no
power assistance for the steering and the
brakes when the engine is not running. You
will then need to use considerably more
force to steer and to brake.
