MON
(Motor Octane Number)
Indicates the petrol octane number, de-
termined by standardised methods.
The MON is a measure of the ->knock
resistance of the petrol.
Nightview system*
Driving system which illuminates the
road with infrared light, in addition to
the normal headlamps, and displays a
black and white image of the road in
the multi-function display. The Night-
view system is also called “Night View
Assist” in the display messages.
Overrevving range
Speeds in the red area of the rev coun-
ter at which the engine may only oper-
ate briefly.
Overrun mode
Passive acceleration (deceleration) of
the vehicle, e.g. when driving on down-
hill gradients or when the accelerator
pedal is released.
Park Assist*
System which makes parking easier by
giving the driver visual and audible sig-
nals.
Parking brake

Parking brake (electric)
Prevents the vehicle from rolling away
when it is parked The electric parking
brake is also described simply as a
parking brake in display messages.
Parktronic*
System which makes parking easier by
giving the driver visual and audible sig-
nals.
Partial load mode
Operating status of the engine in which
only a proportion of the maximum out-
put or maximum torque is requested,
e.g. in ->overrun mode.
RDK*
(tyre pressure monitor)
System for monitoring tyre pressures
during a journey.
RDS
(Radio Data System)
Data transmission system for FM radio
stations.
RON
(Research Octane Number)
Indicates the petrol octane number, de-
termined by standardised methods.
The RON is a measure of the ->knock
resistance of the petrol. In numerical
terms, the RON is approximately
10 points above the ->MON.
SMS
(Short Message Service)
Mobile network service for sending
short messages. Commonly used to
describe the message itself.
SRS
(Supplemental Restraint System)
Additional restraint systems such as
belt tensioners and belt force limiters.
Symmetrical dipped beam
Dipped-beam headlamps setting that il-
luminates one side of the carriageway
as much as the other.
Telematics
Joint term for telecommunications and
information technology.
