Theory of Operation
Paper preheater cleaning
This is a customer-initiated cleaning procedure, selected through the front panel
cleaning menu
Clean: Ink Smears
. The purpose of this cleaning item is to
clean ink out of the paper pre-heater that may have been deposited there.
There are two separate preheater cleaning operations: Quick and Extended.
Each is selected from the front panel
1.
The customer selects
Clean
from the
Clean: Ink Smears
menu
item. The customer then presses
Clean
.
2.
The customer then selects either
Quick
or
Extended
from the
Clean: Ink Smears
sub-menu.
If Quick is selected, then the printer sequentially picks and passes five sheets of
paper through the paper path. Each sheet removes ink from the paper preheater.
The front panel returns to the Clean menu.
If Extended is selected, the following takes place:
1.
The front panel indicates that the cleaning operation will take 20
minutes, giving the user a chance to continue or cancel.
2.
If continued, the printer heats the paper preheater to 110
o
C, softening
ink trapped inside the paper preheater. Ordinarily the paper
preheater runs at temperatures of between 60 and 75
o
C for paper or
transparency film printing.
3.
The printer picks and passes 10 sheets of paper through the print path.
Each sheet absorbs and removes ink from the paper preheater.
4.
The printer returns to the
Clean
menu after a ten minute cool-down
period.
Pick roller cleaning
This is a customer-initiated cleaning procedure, selected through the front panel
cleaning menu
Clean: Media Tray Jams
. The purpose of this cleaning item
is to clean the pick pollers. This procedure requires the pick roller cleaning tray.
In the pick roller cleaning cycle, these events take place:
1.
The customer starts the
Clean: Media Tray Jams
menu item.
2.
The front panel prompts the customer to install the cleaning tray in
the paper tray. (The user must remove all media from the paper tray
and also soak the cleaning tray’s scrubber with alcohol.)
3.
The customer starts the cleaning cycle; the printer responds by
rotating the pick rollers eight times.
