INDICATIONS FOR USE:
Portex® Blue Line Ultra® Tracheostomy Tube is indicated for airway
maintenance of tracheostomised patients.
CONTRAINDICATIONS:
There are no known contraindications for use of this device.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR USE:
1
The integrity of the cuff and inflation system should be
checked prior to insertion.
2
Prior to insertion check that the obturator can be removed
from the tube having first released the retaining clips by means
of a slight twist. Check that the inner cannula (where fitted)
can be inserted and removed from the Tracheostomy tube.
Re-insert the obturator ensuring that it ‘clicks’ into position.
3
A small amount of water soluble lubricant can be applied to
the outer tube and obturator tip to ease insertion.
4
Insert the Tracheostomy tube in accordance with currently
accepted medical techniques and remove the obturator.
5
Inflate the cuff (where fitted) with the minimum amount of air
to provide an effective seal.
6
Secure the Tracheostomy tube with the cotton tapes or Portex®
Tracheostomy tube holder (100/503/200) if provided.
7
Insert the inner cannula (where fitted) into the tracheostomy
tube. Be sure that the inner cannula is securely inserted. A
slight snap should be felt indicating proper positioning.
8
If a patient requires manual or mechanical ventilation while
using a Portex® Fenestrated Tracheostomy tube, insert a non
fenestrated inner cannula before attaching the Tracheostomy
tube to the breathing system.
NOTE: The inner cannula should be routinely checked,
cleaned or replaced at regular intervals.
9
Remove rectangular ‘Patient Notes Label’ from the backing
sheet and add to the patient’s notes in order to record details of
the tracheostomy tube used.
10
Remove the ‘Tracheostomy Flange Tag’ from the backing
sheet (removing the circular ‘cut-out’), fold in half and place
over the tracheostomy tube 15mm connector in order to aid
identification of the size of tube used and, if appropriate, alert
the clinical staff to the presence of fenestrations.
11
Two inner cannulae are provided so that one inner cannula can
continue to be used whilst the other inner cannula is cleaned.
12
Check the inner cannula prior to insertion/re-insertion and
discard if kinked or damaged. Replacement inner cannulae are
available (100/850 or 100/851).
If the Tracheostomy Change Kit with guidewire is used, the
following additional procedures should be performed.
13
Ensure that the guide wire runs smoothly through the
obturator of the new Tracheostomy tube.
14
Insert the guide wire into the indwelling Tracheostomy tube ‘J’
tip first, and feed the guide wire until at least 10cm lies in the
Tracheostomy tube and trachea.
