Chapter Three Hardware Installation
Introduction
This chapter describes the procedures for installing the Commander i+
system hardware. An Installation Checklist is provided, which
summarises all the hardware installation procedures. Each point in the
checklist is then covered in detail, with full installation procedures and
additional relevant information. Where appropriate, illustrations are
provided.
Component Safety Precautions
The Commander i+ equipment contains a considerable number of MOS
and other static-sensitive components. To reduce the incidence of
premature failure due to static discharge, you must take the following
precautions:
•
Never attempt to repair power plug-packs in the field. They are
powered from the 240V mains supply and contain hazardous
voltages.
•
Always discharge static from yourself before handling any Printed
Board Assembly (PBA), and wear an antistatic wrist strap connected
to earth.
•
Always handle PBAs by the edges.
•
Never touch PBA tracks or connectors. Contaminants introduced by
fingers can cause corrosion and high resistance connections.
•
Never touch or straighten components, especially the ceramic sub
assemblies. They are physically delicate and finger pressure can
fracture component leads (even if the leads do not actually break).
•
To protect PBAs against physical damage and damage due to static
discharge, always wrap them in an anti-static package and place
them in the protective packaging provided with the new item.
•
Bus cabling is not polarity-sensitive.
