Ch eck permanent magnets for crack,
damage and looseness, replace y oke
assembly as necessary.

B rushes
a. Ch eck brushes for w ear. Replace brushes
if b elow the limit.
b. Check bru sh spring pressu re to make sur e
brush moves smoothly in bru sh holder.
c. To check brush hold er assemb ly for
grounds, touch one probe of a circuit
tester to ho lder plate an d the oth er prob e
to each of in sulated holders.
Rep lace bru sh ho lder assembly if any
continu ity is noted.

Ov er running clutch and pinion g ear.
While holding clutch housing, rotate
pinion.
Pinion should rotate smoothly in on e
direction (not necessarily easily ), but
should not rotate in opposite d irection.
If the clu tch does not function properly,
rep lace it.
If pinion gear is worn or burred, replace
it.
NOTE
:
Overrunning clutch should no t be clean ed
with grease dissolving solvents, since th ese
would dissolve the lubricant in the clutch
mechanism .

F ront bracket
Replace front bracket as an assemb ly
in clud ing ball b earing if the bearing fails
to ro tate smoothly or it i s noisy.
(6)
R ear bracket
Replace rear bracket as an assemb ly
in clud ing sleeve bearing if th e bearing is
bad ly wo rn.
(7)
I nternal gear a nd pla neta ry gears
Replace th e gears if th eir teeth are bad ly
worn or damaged.
(8)
Sw itch
Check continuity b etween M ter minal and
body (ground).
Rep lace the sw itch if no con tinuity is
noted.

R eassembly a nd adjustment
To reassemble th e starter, follow th e
reverse of disassembling procedure, and
observe th e following precautions:
(1)
A pp ly grease to th e follo win g parts
during assembly.
a. Sleeve bearing and b all.
b. Sleeve b earing in intern al gear.
c. Sleeve bearing in rear bracket.
d. G ear shaft
e. Sliding surface of lever and overrunning
clu tch.
f. Armatu re sh aft gear, intern al g ear and
planetary g ears.
g. Sliding surfaces of pinion and front
bearing.
