*NOTE: Refer to the “Flange, Cannula and Obturator Cleaning”
instructions below.
6. Once the patient is intubated, slowly inflate the cuff only enough
to provide an effective seal. The use of Minimal Occluding
Volume or Minimum Leak Techniques to determine cuff inflation,
and subsequent measuring or monitoring of cuff pressure, is
recommended.
7. Remove the syringe from the valve housing after cuff inflation.
Leaving the syringe attached will keep the valve open, permitting
the cuff to deflate.
8. Verify that the cuff inflation system is not leaking. Integrity of the
cuff inflation system should be verified periodically during the
intubation period. Any deviation from the required seal pressure
should be investigated and noted.
9. Attach the neck strap to the tube. Flex the patient’s head forward
and tie the neck strap. When properly adjusted, you should be
able to place one finger between the neck strap and the patient’s
neck.
10. Follow hospital procedures regarding the suctioning of the airway
lumen to remove secretions.
11. Prior to extubation, deflate the cuff by inserting a syringe into
the valve housing and slowly removing the gas mixture until a
definite vacuum is noted in the syringe and the pilot balloon is
collapsed.
12. Extubate the patient following currently accepted medical
techniques.
13. Discard the tracheostomy tube.
NOTE: Precautions should be taken when discarding any of the
tracheostomy tube devices and accessories. Disposal of medical
devices should be made in accordance with applicable national
regulations for biologically hazardous waste.
Tracheostomy Tube Care
WARNINGS:
• The tracheostomy tube and neck strap
are
supplied sterile.
The tracheostomy tube and neck strap cannot be adequately
resterilized by the user in order to facilitate safe reuse and are
therefore intended for single patient use. Attempts to resterilize
this device may result in product failure and increased risks to
the patient.
