ground. Retighten spring U -b olts as instructed in
"REAR SPRINGS” (SEC. 4B).
10. After all in stallation p roced u res have
been com pleted, check a ir lin e s for le a k s, also
te s t brakes for proper application.
TANDEM AXLE REPLACEMENT
REMOVAL
1. Jack up rea r of v eh icle until load is r e
m oved from sp rin g s, then p lace b lo ck s under
fram e to prevent accidental dropping of v eh icle.
2. D isconnect air brake lin e s at brake cham
b e r s . R efer to BRAKES (SEC. 5).
3. D isconnect w iring or a ir line from pow er
sh ift unit, if equipped with a 2 - or 3 -sp e e d a x le.
4. D isconnect a ir line from in te r -a x le d iffer
ential lock shift cylinder.
5. D isconnect p ro p eller shafts as d irected in
"PROPELLER SHAFTS" (SEC. 4D).

. On Hendrickson type suspension, disconnect
a x le housing from equalizing beam as d irected in
"REAR SPRINGS" (SEC. 4B).
7. On Page and P age type suspension discon
n ect axle housing from spring a s directed in "REAR
SPRINGS” (SEC. 4B).

. On C hevrolet air su sp en sion disconnect axle
housing a s d irected in "REARSPRINGS"(SEC.4B).
9. D isconnect torque or radius rod s as di
r ec ted in "REAR SPRINGS" (SEC. 4B).
10. R oll axle out from under v eh icle, then r e
m ove w h eels, hubs, and bearings as d irected in

"REAR HUBS AND BEARINGS” (SEC. 4C).

W henever another a x le is to be in stalled ,
it may be n e c e ssa r y to rem ove the tw o- o r th r e e -
sp eed shift unit and brake cham bers.
INSTALLATION
1. If brake cham bers or axle sh ift units have
been rem oved, they should be r e in sta lled a s di
rected in r e sp ectiv e se c tio n s.
2. In sta ll hubs, w h eels and tir e s a s d irected
in "REAR HUBS AND BEARINGS" (SEC. 4C). R oll
a xle into p osition under v eh icle.
3. On H endrickson type su sp en sion connect
axle to equalizing beam a s directed in "REAR
SPRINGS" (SEC. 4B).
4. On P age and P age type su spension connect
ax le housing to sp rin g a s d irected in "REAR
SPRINGS” (SEC. 4B).
5. On C hevrolet air suspension, connect axle
housing to low er torque arm as d irected in "REAR
SPRINGS" (SEC. 4B).

. R econnect torque rods a s d irected in "REAR
SPRINGS" (SEC. 4B). On som e v e h ic le s torque rods
a r e adjustable to se c u r e p rop er a x le alignm ent.
7. R econnect p ro p eller shafts a s d irected in
"PROPELLER SHAFTS" (SEC. 4D).

pow er sh ift unit, if veh icle is equipped with a

9. Connect air lin e at in te r -a x le d ifferen tial
lock sh ift cylin d er.
10. R econnect a ir brake lin e s a s d irected in
BRAKES (SEC. 5) in th is manual.
11. Check lubricant le v e l and f ill w ith type
and grade of lubricant in manner in stru cted in
LUBRICATION (SEC. 0) in th is manual. Som e types
of a x le s req u ire additional lubricant at pinion cage
and in te r -a x le d ifferential sh ift housing, when fille d
in itia lly or a fter overhaul.
12. R em ove b lock s and low er v e h icle to the
ground. Retighten sp rin g U -b o lts o r torque arm
low er p late b o lts as in stru cted in "REAR SPRINGS"
(SEC. 4B).
13. A fter a ll in stallation p ro ced u res have
been com pleted, check a ll a ir lin e s for le a k s, also
t e s t b rak es for proper application.
DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER
REPLACEMENT
It may be d e sira b le to rem ove the c a r r ie r
a ssem b ly from the a x le housing, w hile the housing
rem a in s in sta lled under the v e h ic le .
To a s s is t in handling the d ifferen tial c a r r ie r
a sse m b ly , a r o lle r jack should be available; a lso ,
a pan for draining lubricant.
In sp ect axle housing for lubricant lea k s be
fo r e cleaning, then stea m clean thoroughly to r e
m ove a ll dirt or other foreign m atter.
