FRONT SUSPENSION 3-9
REMOVAL
1. Jack up axle and rem ove hubs and b earings
as d irected in "FRONT HUBS AND BEARINGS"
(SEC. 3D). R em ove brake backing plate from s t e e r
ing knuckle. R em ove tie -r o d a s directed in STEER
ING SYSTEM (SEC. 9) of th is manual.
2. R em ove ste e r in g arm from ste erin g knuckle.
3. R em ove kingpin draw key nut and w ash er.
Thread nut on draw key far enough to protect the
th read s. Strike nut with ham m er to lo o sen draw
key. R em ove nut, then d rive pin out with b ra ss
drift and ham m er.
4. R em ove cap s c r e w s attaching upper and
low er king pin bearing caps and gask ets to steerin g
knuckle, then rem ove caps and gask ets.
5. U sing b r a ss drift and ham m er drive king
pin out of axle.

. R em ove ste e r in g knuckle thrust bearing,
sh im s, and O -rin g.
7. R efer to "Inspection and Repair" la ter in
this sectio n for in sp ection and repair procedure.
INSTALLATION
1. B efo re a ssem b ly , thoroughly clean a ll parts;
then coat kingpin with light coat of S.A .E . 10 engine
o il.
2. P o sitio n ste e r in g knuckle on axle, then in
s e r t the thrust bearing into p la c e .
3. In stall a new O -ring s e a l at bottom of upper
bushing.
4 . Align king pin h oles in stee rin g knuckle
yoke, axle end, and thrust bearing; then p a rtia lly
in sta ll kingpin through top.
5. With axle cen ter held firm ly , p la ce a jack
under ste erin g knuckle; then r a ise until a ll c le a r
ance betw een knuckle low er yoke, thrust bearing
and axle center is taken up. Check clea ra n ce b e
tw een top of axle cen ter and knuckle upper yoke.
If clea ra n ce e x cee d s 0.005", p la ce a sh im betw een
axle center and knuckle upper yoke.

. Install king pin, with m illed slo t in sid e of
pin r e g iste r in g with draw key hole in a x le cen ter.
In stall king pin from top, in sertin g through ste erin g
knuckle yoke, sh im , thrust bearing and axle cen ter
end. P r e s s pin down until m illed s lo t in pin lin es
up w ith draw key hole.
7. In sert draw key into axle center, r e g is t e r
ing with k in g p in , then in sta ll lock w asher and nut.
Tighten nut fir m ly . If nut bottom s on knuckle b e
fore king pin is s e c u r e , rep la ce draw key or u se
a draw key with m ore taper.
8
. In stall new g a sk ets, then in sta ll upper and
low er kingpin bearing caps w ith cap s c r e w s . T ight
en cap s c r e w s to torque liste d in "Specifications."
9. L ubricate king p in s thoroughly through lu
brication fittings as d irected in LUBRICATION
(SEC. 0) of this m anual. T ry action of steerin g
knuckle fo r binding condition.
10. In stall ste e r in g a rm s to knuckles. In stall

S e lect the proper s iz e draw key to obtain the
follow ing condition when fu lly installed:

than 3 /8 -in c h . With key in sta lled , stake around
draw key hole a s shown in view below:

The ste e r in g knuckles a re supported on so lid
king p in s w hich a r e tapered at cen ter sectio n to
fit snugly in tapered h o les in axle cen ter outer
ends. A s t e e l s le e v e bushing (2) is m ountedbetween
the knuckle upper D elrin bushing (1) and the king
pin to m aintain the sa m e s iz e bearing at top and
bottom . B ushings a r e sp lit D elrin and a r e of float
ing type.
