WHEEL BEARINGS
A ll w heel b earings (except o il lubricated type)
req u ire high tem perature g r e a se . Instructions for
the adjustment of w heel b earings w ill be found in
"FRONT HUBS AND BEARINGS" (SEC. 3D) of this
manual.
CLEANING
With a stiff b r istle brush and cleaning solvent,
thoroughly clean b earin gs and hubs, making su re
that a ll old lubricant and dirt is rem oved. Check
b earin gs and cups, rep lace damaged p arts.
PACKING
Some wheel b earin gs a re lubricated from axle
d ifferen tial after the in itial lubrication. H owever,
w henever wheel hub is rem oved, b earings should
be cleaned, in sp ected , and r e-lu b rica ted . Some
re a r w heel b earin gs require cleaning, inspection,
and lubrication at regular in terv a ls a s sp ecified
on lubrication ch arts.
When packing by hand, be su re that lubricant
is kneaded betw een r o lle r s and r a c e s . A m echan
ic a l lubricator can be used; how ever, b earings
m ust be thoroughly lubricated.
DO NOT FILL HUB. Coat in sid e hub and axle
spindle with thin coat (

" thick) of g r e a se to r e
tard rusting. Allow som e e x c e s s g r e a se at inner
sid e of b earin gs and around adjusting nut. DO NOT
PACK HUB WITH GREASE. The lubricant applied
to b earin gs i s su fficien t to provide lubrication
until next s e r v ic e period. Readjust b earin gs a s
d escrib ed in "FRONT HUBS AND BEARINGS"
(SEC. 3D) or "REAR HUBS AND BEARINGS"(SEC.
4C) of th is manual.
STEERING GEAR LUBRICANT
(SYMBOL “ SG” ON CHARTS)
The lubricant indicated by the sym bol "SG"
is a sp e c ia l ste erin g gea r lubricant, No. 0 grade
w ith low cold te s t c h a r a c te r istic s and extrem e
p r e s s u r e p r o p e r tie s. T his type of lubricant is
m arketed by many o il com panies.
M ulti-P urpose o il "MPO" p reviou sly d e s
crib ed , may be used to rep len ish steerin g gear
housing when additional lubricant is required;
how ever, lubricant a s d escrib ed p reviou sly m ust
be used a s in itial f ill a fter overhaul, or in a new
gea r.
At sp ecified in tervals, rem ove f ille r plug in
housing and add lubricant to bring le v e l up to fille r
plug opening. Do not o v e r fill housing.
When hard steerin g is encountered a s a resu lt
of cold w eather, the steerin g s y s te m should be lu
bricated a s follow s:
U se ste e r in g gear lubricant (Symbol "SG") or
M u lti-P u rp ose G rea se (N.L.G .I. #0) to lubricate
a ll ste e r in g linkage such a s steerin g knuckles, tie
rod en d s, drag link ends, and (if used) pow er s te e r
ing b o o ster cylinder ends.
PETROLEUM JELLY
(SYMBOL “ S3” ON CHARTS)
The type lubricant indicated by the sym bol
"S3" is petroleum je lly or petrolatum .
DISTRIBUTOR BREAKER CAM
At recom m ended in ter v a ls, apply a sm a ll
amount of petroleum je lly on distributor b reaker
cam . Do not u se an e x c e s s iv e am ount.
BATTERY TERMINALS
To prevent c orrosion , rem ove c a b le s, clean
term in a ls on cable and b attery, and r e in sta ll the
ca b les to battery term in a ls. Tighten the cables
se c u r e ly , then apply p etroleu m je lly .
WATERPROOF GREASE
(SYMBOL “ S4” ON CHARTS)
This type of lubricant should be w aterproof
g r e a s e containing 20 to 35 p er cent calciu m soap.
On m odels equipped with p ro p eller shaft center
b ea rin g s, both s id e s of the sh ie ld should be packed
w ith th is lubricant at the tim e of a sse m b ly . T his
lubricant excludes w ater and dirt from bearing.
L ubricants Must B e Stored and D isp en sed in Such
a Manner That They W ill B e Clean and F ree of
Contamination, Due to D irt or Other F oreign M atter.
