ing operation; how ever, the tie - b a r m ust be cut to
p e rm it disassem bly of joint.
Types 1410 and 1480 (Fig. 4). Joint b earing
cages a r e re ta in e d in yoke flanges on p ro p e lle r
shaft by snap rin g s. B earin g s at opposite end of
p ro p e lle r shaft a r e attached to journal c ro s s with
snap rin g s and U -bolts, lock w a sh e rs and nuts. A
visu al inspection m ust be made of vehicle to de
te rm in e at which end of p ro p e lle r shaft U -bolts
and lock rin g s a r e u sed and a t which end of p ro
p e lle r shaft lock rin g s only a r e used. N eedle r o ll
e r s a r e in stalle d in b ea rin g cages and oil s e a ls
a r e in sta lle d on inner ends of cages.
R ep air Kits
U niversal joint re p a ir kits a r e available fo r
a ll types of u n iv e rsa l joints. Each kit contains a
jo u rn al, bearin g s and s e a ls , and retaining com
ponents which should always be replaced when
overhauling a u n iv e rsa l joint.
CENTER BEARING (Fig. 6)
C en ter b ea rin g s a r e u sed to support c e n te r
po rtio n of d riv e line when two o r m ore p ro p e lle r
sh afts a r e used. B earin g is b all type, mounted in
a ru b b e r cushion which is attached to fra m e
c ro s sm e m b e r by the c e n te r bearing sup po rt. The
two ce n te r b ea rin g s shown in c ro s s section in
fig u re 6 a r e of the sam e construction except for
shape and location of dust s lin g e rs . View B illu s

LUBRICATION
Jo u rn a ls of u n iv e rsa l joints a r e d rille d and
provided with lu b ricatio n fitting s through which
lu b rican t tra v e ls to a ll four oil re s e rv o irs , then
through a sm a ll hole in sid e of each re s e rv o ir,
d ire c t to needle b ea rin g s. Needle b earin g s a re
p ro tec ted ag ain st lu b rican t leakage and entrance
of foreign m a tte r by s e a ls . Splines of slip joint
a r e lub ricated through lu bricatio n fitting in stalled
in slip yoke.

U niversal joints

splines should be lubricated p eriodic
ally as specified in LUBRICATION
(SEC. 0)
of this manual.
PROPELLER SHAFT REMOVAL
Disconnecting

p e lle r shaft may be rem oved at any flange joint by
rem oving nuts from bolts holding flange. On o th er
v eh icle s, p ro p e lle r shafts m ust be disconnected at
u n iv e rsa l joints as d esc rib ed la te r in this section.
