b ea rin g s a r e used, it is n e c e ssa ry to disconnect
c e n te r b earing support from c ro ssm e m b e r.
DISASSEMBLY OPERATIONS
SLIP JOINT DISASSEMBLY
With p ro p e lle r shaft rem oved, look fo r arro w
m a rk s on p ro p e lle r shaft and slip yoke as shown
in fig u res 3 and 4. If both m ark s a re not clea rly
d iscern ib le , punch m ark both m em b ers to in su re
assem bly in exactly sam e re la tiv e position. When
c lea rly m arked, u nscrew dust cap and w ithdraw
shaft. Remove cork o r fe lt w asher, s te e l w asher,
and dust cap from shaft.
UNIVERSAL JOINT DISASSEMBLY
T ypes 58WB and 68WB (F igs. 2 and 3)
Remove sp ecial cap sc re w s and lock w a sh e rs
attaching bearin g cages on opposite ends of jo u r
nal to m ating flange. Cut welded tie b a r, then
rem ove b earing a sse m b lies from jou rn al.
Types 14i0 and 1480 (Fig. 4)
1. On u n iv e rsa l joints using snap rin g s to r e
tain b ea rin g s on jo u rn al c ro s s, rem ove snap rin gs
(fig. 4).
2. On u n iv e rsa l joints using U -bolts o r self
locking bolts to re ta in b earin g s on jo u rn al c ro s s,
rem ove nuts and w a sh e rs fro m U -bolts, then r e
move U -bolts. If s e lf locking bolts a re used , r e
move bolts.
3. S trike one sid e of yoke with ham m er to
fo rce one b earin g out of yoke. S trike opposite side
of yoke to fo rce opposite b ea rin g out.
CAUTION: Use c a re to p re v en t b ea rin g s from
dropping on flo o r as irre p a ra b le dam age may
re su lt.
4. Jo u rn a ls can now be tilte d to p e rm it r e
m oval of yoke from jou rn al.
5. Remove the o th er two b ea rin g s in the sam e
m an ner to p e rm it rem oving jo urnal.
