AXLE SHAFT REPLACEMENT
REMOVAL

. Install bearing retaining w ash er, p rop eller
shaft yoke, retaining w asher, and nut. Tighten nut
to recom m ended torque, u sin g holding bar and
sock et w rench in m anner illu stra ted in figure 9.

a s d irected la ter under heading “ A ll A x le s .”
R ockw ell Tandem Forward Unit
1. Install new c a r r ie r to housing gasket.
2. R oll c a r r ie r a ssem b ly into p osition using
r o lle r jack. Start c a r r ie r ov er stu d s in housing,
u sing flat w a sh ers under equally spaced stud nuts.
3. Tighten a ll nuts even ly and alternately
until c a r r ie r is in position. R eplace tem porary
flat w a sh ers. Install lock w a sh ers, then tighten all
nuts to sp ecified torque.
4. Install new thru shaft bearing retain er to
rea r of axle housing bowl.

Install thru shaft into housing (fig. 11). A s
shaft is pushed forward, slid e clutch gear over
forw ard end of shaft.

. Rotate and push shaft forw ard until rear
bearing i s against housing. Install retaining cap
sc r e w s with lock w ash ers and tighten to reco m
mended torque.
7. Install in te r -a x le shift housing to ca r r ie r
gasket.

with sh ift le v e r in shift co lla r groove.
9. Install and tighten cap sc r e w s and lock
w a sh ers to recom m ended torque.
10. P erform additional in stallation operations
a s d irected la te r under heading “ A ll A x le s .”
A ll A x les
1. Connect p ro p eller shaft to r ea r axle yoke
a s d irected in “ PROPELLER SHAFTS” (SEC.4D).
2. On 2- o r 3 -sp eed a x le s connect w iring to
e le c tr ic sh ift unit or air lin e s to sh ift u n its, a lso
connect air lin e to in te r -a x le d ifferen tial lock
shift cylinder on forward axle of tandem units.
3. Install axle shafts a s d irected under head
ing “ A xle Shaft R eplacem ent” in th is sectio n .
4. F ill to le v e l of fille r plug opening with
lubricant recom m ended in LUBRICATION (SEC. 0)
of th is manual.
REPLACEMENT
1. Rem ove nuts from studs attaching axle
shaft flange to w heel hub.
2. Strike center of flange with a lea d ham m er
to loosen flange and sp lit tapered d ow els.
3. R em ove sp lit tapered d ow els from studs.
In som e in sta n ces it may be n e c e s s a r y to spread
d ow els, w hile being rem oved.
4. G rasp axle shaft flange and pull outward
to rem ove. Rem ove and d isca rd gasket.
