D riving torque and braking fo rc e s a r e t r a n s
m itted directly to the fram e through torque rod s
a t fro n t axle unit and ra d iu s leaves at r e a r axle
unit.
Through a ro c k e r a rm , torque rod, and rad iu s
leaf arran g e m e n t, the weight im posed upon the
r e a r axle is equally d istrib u te d between the two
axle units as shown in figure 20. All pivot-points
a r e ru b b er bushed. Torque rods a r e solid type.
The r e a r axle unit is equipped with adjustable
eccen tric co m p ressio n bolts which attach the r e a r
sp rin g ra d iu s leav e s to the ro c k e r a rm b rack et
assem bly.
SPRINGS
REMOVAL (FRONT UNIT)
(R efer to Fig. 20)
1. Block front w heels to prev en t vehicle from
rollin g . Jac k up fra m e until tension and weight a r e
rem oved fro m sp rin g s. B lock fram e sec u rely .
2. Remove nuts and w a sh e rs fro m sp rin g U-
bolts, then rem ove U -bolts, U -bolt sp a c e r, and
U -bolt axle clam p.
3. Remove bolt nut, bolt, and rebound r o lle r
fro m ro c k e r arm .
4. Move sp rin g assem b ly re a rw a rd and r e
move from vehicle.
REMOVAL (REAR UNIT)

1. Block front w heels to prev en t vehicle from
rolling, Jac k up fra m e until tension and weight
a r e rem oved fro m s p rin g s. B lock fram e sec u rely .
2. Remove nuts and w a sh ers from spring
U -bolts, then rem ove anchor p late, U -bolts and
U -bolt sp a c e r.
3. Remove bolt nut, bolt, and rebound ro lle r
fro m ro c k e r a rm .
4. At sp rin g eye, rem ove com p ressio n bolt,
lock bolt, re ta in in g bolt nut, flat w asher, and r e
taining bolt.
5. Using suitable tools, p ry com p ressio n bolt
out of sp ring eye, then rem ove co m pressio n w asher
at inside of fra m e .
6. Remove sp rin g assem bly fro m vehicle.
TORQUE RODS

SPRING DISASSEMBLY
1. M ark down one side of sp rin g s to a s s u re
o rig in al position of leav es when assem blin g la te r,
then p lace spring in a v ise o r a rb o r p r e s s next
to ce n te r bolt.
2. On r e a r sprin g, rem ove nut, bolt, and
s p a c e r fro m sp rin g clip.
3. Rem ove sp rin g ce n te r b olt. R elease vise
o r a rb o r p r e s s slowly to avoid p o ssib le injury.
CLEANING, INSPECTION. AND REPAIR
1. Clean a ll ru s t and d irt from sprin g leav es,
using a w ire b ru sh o r s c r a p e r.
2. Inspect leaves fo r c ra c k s o r b re a k s . The
N os. 1, 2, and 3 leaves on front and Nos. 1, 2, and
3 m ain leaves and ra d iu s leaves Nos. 1 and 2 on
r e a r can be rep laced . If o ther than th ese leaves
a r e broken, the com plete sp ring assem b ly m ust be
re p laced .
3. Inspect ra d iu s le a f ru b b er bushings. If
bushings a r e worn o r d e te rio ra te d , re p la ce.
ASSEMBLY OF SPRING
1. Stack sprin g leav es i n c o r r e c t o rd e r, then
c o m p re ss leav es with v ise o r a rb o r p r e s s .
2. On r e a r spring, ra d iu s leav es, in s ta ll spring
clip sp a c e r, clip bolt, and nut. Tighten nut firm ly .
3. In stall ce n te r bolt and nut. Tighten nut
firm ly , then re le a s e vise o r a rb o r p r e s s .
INSTALLATION (FRONT UNIT)

1. P la c e sp rin g assem b ly on s p rin g sea t,
m aking s u re ends of sp rin g assem bly a r e p ro p e rly
po sitio ned and that cen ter bolt e n te rs locating hole
in sp rin g sea t.
2. P o sitio n rebound ru b ber r o lle r in ro c k e r
a rm , then in stall bolt and nut. Tighten nut to 100-
120 foot-pounds torque.
3. P la ce U -bolt s p a c e r on top of spring , then
in sta ll U -bolts.
4. In stall U -bolt axle clam p and U -bolt w ash
e r s and n uts. Tighten nuts to to rq ue liste d in
"T orque S pecifications” at end of th is section
