STEERING SYSTEM 9-10
IDLER LEVER BUSHING REPLACEMENT
(TM 80—TILT CA B MODELS)
REMOVAL AND DISASSEMBLY (F ig. 11)
1. R em ove id ler link from id ler le v e r as p r e
v iou sly d escrib ed .
2. R em ove cotter pin and turn end plug of
drag link enough that drag link can be rem oved
fro m id ler le v e r ball stud.
3. R em ove cotter pin, nut, and w asher which
attach id ler le v e r to support bracket.
4. Rem ove id ler le v e r and inner and outer
dust s e a ls from support bracket.
5. Using a p r e s s and suitable s le e v e , p r e s s
inner and outer bushings from id ler le v e r .

. Clean id ler le v e r and check for w ear or
dam age. If worn, or damaged, discard le v e r and
u se new part at a ssem b ly .
ASSEMBLY AND INSTALLATION (F ig . 11)
1. U sing a p r e s s and su itab le s le e v e , p r e ss
new inner and outer bushings into bore of id ler
le v e r . P r e s s bushings in to d im ensions shown in
figu re

2. P osition id ler lev er and inner and outer
dust s e a ls on support bracket shaft, then attach
w ith nut and w ash er. Tighten nut se c u r e ly and in
sta ll new cotter pin.
3. P o sitio n drag link on id ler le v e r ball stud,
then u sin g a su itab le tool, tighten end plug firm ly
to rem ove a ll end play.
4. Back off end plug % to ^ turn and in stall
new cotter pin to lock the adjustm ent. B all joint
m ust be tight enough to prevent end p lay, y et lo o se
enough to allow fr e e m ovem ent.
5. Install id ler link on id ler le v e r , attaching
with stud nut and new cotter pin.
STEERING WHEEL AND STEERING COLUMN
NOTE: A ll steerin g w heel, steerin g colum n, and steerin g shaft coupling attach
ing b olts and nuts, are im portant attaching p arts in that they could affect the p e r
form ance of v ita l com ponents and s y s te m s , an d /or could re su lt in m ajor repair
exp en se. They m ust be replaced with parts of the sam e part num bers or with equiv
alent p arts if replacem ent b ecom es n e c e ssa r y . Do not u se replacem ent parts of
le s s e r quality o r substitute design. Torque values m ust be u sed a s sp ecified during
rea ssem b ly to a ssu r e proper retention of th ese p a rts.
STEERING WHEEL REPLACEMENT (ALL
SERIES EXCEPT ALUM. TILT CAB)
REMOVAL
1. D isconnect directional sign al sw itch har
n e ss from c h a ssis w iring h arness connector.
2. Set front w h eels in straight-ahead p osition,
then pry horn button cap and retainer from s t e e r
ing w heel.
3. R em ove ste erin g w heel nut and w ash er.
4. U sing puller (J-2927-01), rem ove steerin g
w h eel (fig. 12). It may be n e c e ssa r y to tap on bolt
head of tool with a ham m er a s it is turned down to
loosen a tight steer in g w heel.
INSTALLATION
NOTE: Front w h eels must be in straight-ahead
p osition and directional sig n a l control assem b ly
m ust be in neutral p osition when in stallin g steerin g
w heel.
1. On v eh ic les equipped with a tw o-spoke
steerin g w heel, p osition w heel on steerin g shaft
with spokes of w heel in a horizontal position. On
v e h ic le s equipped with a th ree-sp o k e w heel, p o si
tion w heel on shaft with low er spoke of steerin g
w heel in v e rtic a l position.
2. Tap ste erin g w heel gently into p lace.
3. In stall w asher and steerin g w heel locking
nut on steerin g shaft. Tighten nut to torque liste d
in "Specifications" at end of th is sectio n .
4.
In stall retain er and horn button cap and
connect directional sig n a l w iring h arn ess to c h a ssis
w iring h arn ess connector.
