TIE ROD ANTI-ROTATION BUSHING

NOTE: T hese tie rod anti-rotation bushing fa sten ers a re im portant attaching
parts in that they could affect the perform ance of vital com ponents and s y s te m s ,
a n d /o r could resu lt in m ajor repair expense. They m ust be rep laced -with one of the
sa m e part number or with an equivalent part if replacem ent b ecom es n e c e s s a r y .
Do not u se a replacem ent part of l e s s e r quality o r substitute design. Torque values
m ust be used a s sp ecified during rea ssem b ly to a ssu r e proper retention of th ese parts
On so m e trucks covered in this manual equip
p ed w ith power ste e r in g , anti-rotation bushings
a r e in stalled over tie rod end studs between tie
rod ends and steerin g arm s (fig. 17). Each bushing
c o n sists of two cupped w ash ers and a rubber w ash
e r . P u rp ose of anti-rotation bushings is to prevent
■weight of th e pow er cylinder, which i s clam ped to
the tie rod, from rotating the tie rod and causing

tie rod ends to bind against the ball stu d s. Bushings
should be rep laced if they b ecom e w orn enough to
perm it rotation of the tie rod.
BUSHING REPLACEMENT
REMOVAL
1. At each end of the tie rod, rem ove cotter
pin and stud nut. D isca rd cotter p in s.
2. Tap tie rod lo o se from ste erin g a rm s.
3. Rem ove two cupped m etal w a sh ers and rub
ber w asher from each tie rod end stud. D isca rd
th ese p a rts.
INSTALLATION
1. P o sitio n two new cupped w a sh ers and new
rubber w asher on each tie rod end stud.
2. L oosen both sock et end clam p bolts; then
in sta ll tie rod on steer in g a rm s, rotating socket
ends a s n e c e ssa r y to align p a r ts. The upper and
lo w er cupped w a sh ers m ust b e p a r a lle l when no
power or p r e s s u r e is applied to the t ie rod. Install
stud nuts and new cotter p in s.
3. With parts properly aligned (fig. 17), tighten
sock et end clam p b olts to 40-50 f t .- lb s . torque.
4. In stall tie rod ball studs to ste erin g arm s
and torque to "Specifications" lis te d at the end of
th is section .
OIL COOLER
An o il cooler is attached to the radiator
front support on som e gasolin e engine m odels
with pow er stee rin g . The o il cooler is not u sed on
D ie se l engine m odels with power steerin g .
The co o ler may be rem oved for repair or r e
placem ent, if n e c e ssa r y , by disconnecting h oses
and rem oving sc r e w s which attach it to support
b ra ces.
OIL COOLER MAINTENANCE
At regular in tervals, or when operating con
ditions warrant, exam ine the cooler for leak s and
bent fin s. A damaged or leaking co o ler should be
se r v ic e d by a radiator sp e c ia list or replaced with
a new a ssem b ly . P roper rep air req u ires the u se of
sp e c ia l to o ls and equipment a s w ell a s p ro v isio n s
for making proper t e s ts .
If the co o ler a ssem b ly req u ires painting, spray
w ith sp e c ia l radiator paint; do not u se paint m ixed
w ith o il, a s o il m ixed paint w ill form an insulation
and prevent efficien t dissipation of heat.
O ccasional external flushing with w ater, using
an ordinary h o se, w ill help rem ove dirt, bugs, and
other foreign m atter from betw een fin s of co o ler.
W ater under p r e ssu r e should be d irected from b e
hind the co o ler to fo r c e dirt out in opposite d ir e c
tion of its entrance. D irect the w ater strea m against
edges of fins (not sidew ays) to elim inate danger of
bending fin s.
