TORQUE ROD INSTALLATION
1.
In stall torq ue ro d b ra c k e t on fram e c r o s s
m em ber.
IMPORTANT: It is e sse n tial to u se sam e
num b er of s p a c e rs o r shim s as p rev iou sly u sed to
a s s u re o rig in al drive line alignm ent.
2.
In stall to rq ue ro d with end studs in se rte d
through b ra c k e ts a t axle and at c ro ssm e m b e r. In
s ta ll nut and w a sh e r on each end stud. With weight
of unloaded vehicle on suspension, tighten torque
ro d end stud nuts firm ly . S trike b all end of each
end stud a sh arp blow with ham m er to a s s u re s e a t
ing of ta p e rs .

mounted to the c r o s s tube with sp rin g eyes ru b b er
en cased in cup-shaped re ta in e rs .
The torque ro d s a r e positioned to m aintain
p ro p e r drive line alignm ent a s well a s to sta b iliz e
driving and braking fo rc e s . F igu re 18 shows a
typical arran g e m e n t of suspension sy ste m un its.
R ubber mounts and bushings a r e used at a ll pivot
points including torque ro d ball studs.
When a m ajor overhaul is re q u ired , the com
p lete tandem unit should be rem oved fro m the
fram e; however, torque ro d s, sp rin g s, ro c k e r
a r m s , and other com ponents may be rem oved
se p a ra te ly a s re q u ire d . V ehicle should be safely
blocked to prev en t ro llin g b efore s ta rtin g work.
TANDEM UNIT REPLACEMENT
TANDEM UNIT REMOVAL
1. Block w heels on both axles and disconnect
b ra k e lin es from ax les.
2. D isconnect p ro p e lle r shaft fro m fo rw ard
r e a r axle a s ejqplained in "PRO PELLER SHAFTS"
(SEC. 4D).
3. Support fra m e s e c u re ly and rem ove bolts
which attach p ed e sta l to c ro s s tube o r fra m e .
4. On a ll m odels, note num ber of sh im s b e
tween torque rod b ra c k e ts and bogie c ro ssm e m b e r,
to in su re sam e dim ension at installation . At each
axle end, rem ove nut fro m torque ro d end stud and
drive end stud out of axle b ra ck et using a soft
ham m er.
5. Check to m ake s u re a ll lines have been
disconnected from axle, then using a suitable hoist,
r a is e r e a r end of fra m e and ro ll axles, with ro c k e r
a r m s c ro s s tube and sp rin g s, out from under fra m e .
TANDEM UNIT INSTALLATION
1.
Roll axles and w heels, with ro c k e r a rm s
c r o s s tube, and sp rin g s attached, in position under
fra m e .
2. Low er fra m e a s re q u ire d to align p edestal
with c r o s s tube o r fra m e and in sta ll p ed e sta l to
c ro s s tube o r fra m e bolts and tighten to torque
lis te d in "Specifications" at end of th is section.
3. In s ta ll torqu e ro ds to axle b ra ck et.
NOTE: When tightening to rq ue rod stud nuts,
rap b ra c k e t with h am m er to drive ta p e r of torque
ro d stud into b ra ck et. Tighten nut to torque lis te d
in "Specifications" a t end of th is section.
4. Connect b ra k e lin es to each axle assem bly,
then connect p ro p e lle r shaft and check d riv e line
alignm ent a s covered in "PR O PELLER SHAFTS"
(SEC. 4D).
SPRING REPLACEMENT
SPRING REMOVAL (Fig. 18)
1. R aise vehicle fra m e to rem ove load from
sp ring . Support fram e sec u rely .
2. Rem ove c ro s s tube to spring cap U -bolt
