Chapter 6
SmartPAC 2 Run Mode
A percentage factor of 20 percent is recommended for presses with new brakes or brakes in
good condition; a percentage factor of 10 percent is recommended for presses with older
brakes. This is because the stopping time for older brakes will be longer due to wear.
Therefore, you add less time for older brakes.
An example for calculating the safety distance using the OSHA formula
The OSHA formula for finding safety distance is:
Ds = 63 inches/sec. x Ts
We will use a stop time of .190 seconds for this example. This number includes press
stopping and response time of SmartPAC 2.
Next we will add in the braking percentage factor. Let's say our brakes are new. Then we will
add 20% additional time to the stop time measurement (.20 x .190 = .038).
We also must add response time of Shadow V (.030 seconds). Then:
Ts
= .190 sec. + .038 sec (braking factor) + .030 sec. (Shadow response time)
Ts
= .258
Now, we will calculate safety distance:
Ds
= 63 in/sec x Ts
Ds
= 63 x .258
Ds
= 16.3 in.
Shadow must be mounted more than 16.3 inches from the pinch point using the OSHA
formula.
Adding to Safety Distance for Floating or Blanking Windows
The above examples showed how to calculate the safety distance for Shadows when blanking
windows were not used. If using blanking windows, you must add 2.6" (6.6 cm) to the
calculated safety distance. This applies whether you use the ANSI or OSHA formula.
So remember this rule: when a blanking or floating window is used, you must add 2.6" (6.6
cm) to the safety distance. Blanking windows and floating windows are discussed in your
Shadow V user manual.
Refer to Figure 3 (for Herion valve) or Figure 5 (for Ross) found at the end of the WPC user
manual shows wiring connections between Shadow V and SmartPAC 2.
