b) Wipers
The wipers are operated by the wiper motor to perform wiping operations for the
nozzle arrays of the BJ print heads. To improve wiping performance, three pairs of
wiper blades (consisting of a wide blade and a narrow blade) there are.
The wiping operation is executed in a "rotary wipe" style; that is, the wiper blade is
revolved by the normal rotation of the wiper motor for wiping of each nozzle array.
This action is performed after the printing or suction operations through the rotation
of the blade and the forward drive control of the carriage.
The cam raises the wiper unit up to the wiping position when the wiping starts. The
wiper blade, positioned perpendicular to the head, cleans the nozzle array A of the
BJ print head A that has been moved to the appropriate location for wiping. Then
the next blade rotates and stops so that it is positioned perpendicular to the head,
before the nozzle array B of the BJ print head A is cleaned by the wiping action. In a
similar way, the rotation/wait and wiping process by the blade is repeated for the
other arrays until the wiping of the nozzle array C of the BJ print head D is
completed.
A pair of wiping blades consists of the wide and narrow blades. The wide blade first
cleans the entire face plate of a nozzle array, and then the narrow blade cleans the
nozzles and their vicinity.
The wiper blades are cleaned before they are set at the wiping position to maintain
their wiping capability.
The ink "scraping" attachment, which is connected to the waste ink tank, cleans the
wiper blades by rubbing off the ink on the blade surface, and then wipes the surface
with the blade cleaner.
The wiper motor also operates the cover open/close arm of the print position sensor
through its reverse rotation.
The cover open/close arm is raised prior to the start of the sensor detection
sequence to open the cover, and then is lowered to its original position. After the
completion of the detection sequence, the arm is raised to close the cover, and is
lowered to its position.
