a) Ink Supply from Ink Bottle to Sub Tank
The ink bottle contains ink which is supplied to the BJ print head.
The printer has two types of sub tanks: the closed sub tank, which allows for the ink
bottle to be replaced during the printing operation; and the open sub tank, which
allows a meniscus to form in the nozzles of the BJ print head. This meniscus is
supported by the fluid level difference.
The check valve prevents the back flow of ink during ink bottle replacement and
when positive pressure is applied to the closed sub tank.
To supply the ink from the ink bottle to the sub tank, first close off the air valve, the
A-C valve, the C-S valve, and all the pump valves for the color inks except the pump
valve supplying ink to the closed sub tank.
Operate the ink supply pump using the normal rotation to apply negative pressure
in the closed sub tank. This allows the ink in the ink bottle to flow into the closed
sub tank through the check valve.
When the sub tank ink sensor in the closed sub tank reports the ink-full state, open
the air valve and stop the ink supply pump. Then open the A-C and C-S valves.
Close the air and A-C valves and operate the ink supply pump, at this time, applying
a reverse rotation for a predefined time period to create positive pressure in the
closed sub tank. This operation allows the ink contained in the closed sub tank to
flow into the open sub tank through the C-S ink tube. Then, the ink will be supplied
smoothly from the closed sub tank to the open sub tank due to the fluid level
difference without applying positive pressure to the closed subtank.
Ink is supplied from the ink bottle until the sub tank ink sensor detects the ink full
status (that is, until ink is supplied to the Ink Full level in both the open sub tank
and the closed sub tank).
b) Ink Supply from Sub Tank to Air Buffer
(Air circulation to eliminate air bubbles in the ink tube)
The air buffer component has the functionality to remove air bubbles in the ink tube
and absorb the pressure applied to the ink resulting from the carriage's shuttle
movements. To supply the ink from the sub tank to the air buffer, close the air valve,
the C-S valve, and the A-H valve. Operate the ink supply pump by applying the
normal rotation to create negative pressure in the closed sub tank. This allows the
ink to circulate from the open sub tank to the closed sub tank through the air buffer
component. Thus the ink is supplied to the air buffer from the sub tanks. At the
same time, the ink is supplied from the ink bottle to the closed sub tank via the
check valve.
c) Ink Supply from Air Buffer to BJ Print Head
Operating the suction pump with the head capped will supply the ink from the air
buffer to the BJ print head. The ink absorbed from the cap runs into the waste-ink
tank through the waste ink repository.
d) Ink Supply during Printing
During the printing operation, the negative pressure in the nozzles produced by the
ink ejecting process allows a constant flow of ink from the open sub tank to the BJ
print head. The constant ink flow from the closed sub tank to the open sub tank is
assured by the fluid level difference between the two tanks. When the sub tank ink
sensor detects the ink empty, the ink contained in the ink bottle is automatically
supplied to the closed sub tank. The waste-ink, which is collected by the cleaning
operation or held in the maintenance jet receive receptacle, flows into the waste ink
tank through the waste ink repository.
