3.6 Purge Unit

3.6.1 Functions of Purge unit

The purge unit through maintenance of the nozzles of the BJ print heads. The purge
unit functions includes capping, cleaning, and ink supply.

a) Capping

The capping feature prevents the nozzles from drying up or dust by applying the cap
of the purge unit to the nozzle face of the BJ print head.
The capping action of the nozzle face is executed upon the completion of printing, at
the start of the suction operation, and when switching to the standby state (due to
an error).
When the capping operation starts, the ink passage between the BJ print head and
the purge unit is established.

b) Cleaning

Cleaning is divided into three maintenance actions: the wiping, suction, and
maintenance jet. Wiping removes the fine paper fibers and dried ink deposits on the
nozzle face plates by "wiping." suction is the action in which the ink within the
nozzles is aspirated and new ink is drawn to "refresh" the nozzles. In maintenance
jet function, the ink is sprayed from the nozzles to the cap or maintenance jet tray to
remove bubbles in the nozzles, or extraneous dirt/dust/foreign particles attached
near the nozzles. The combination of the three maintenance actions improves nozzle
ejecting performance.

The table below shows conditions in which cleaning operation starts, the target
nozzles, and ink consumption for each cleaning.
