228 Using the FC-FC routing service
Connecting to HP M-Series or McDATA SANs
Fabric OS 5.2.x lets you connect an HP StorageWorks B-Series fabric to an HP M-Series or McDATA fabric.
Because of the high degree of connectivity, the devices across the remote fabrics can be shared. Fabric OS
5.2.x furnishes the FC router with the ability to connect to
HP M-Series fabrics in Open mode and
McDATA Fabric mode.
NOTE:
HP M-Series and McDATA fabrics are supported in Open mode.
Connected SANs provide additional functionality not possible with segregated SANs. Some of these
include:
•
Island consolidation
—Use the Fabric OS 5.2.x FC router to connect
HP B-Series, M-Series or
McDATA fabrics to i
solated
B-Series fabrics and share devices
.
•
Backup consolidation
—Consolidate backup solutions across
HP B-Series, M-Series or McDATA
fabrics
.
•
Manageable large scale storage network
—Use the Fabric OS 5.2.x FC router to localize
traffic while connecting devices in the metaSAN. This provides a large number of fabrics with a large
number of devices.
•
Sharing across a FCIP link
— share devices between
HP B-Series, M-Series or McDATA fabrics
over campus Ethernet or over long-distance IP link beyond 1000 km.
•
Sharing across a long-distance FC link
—share devices between HP fabrics over long-distance
FC links as far as 300 km.
•
LUN sharing
—use your high-end RAID array connected to
HP M-Series or McDATA
Directors to
share targets with a
B-Series
HP fabric; just connect one
M-Series or
McDATA Director port to an FC
router EX_Port and the one EX_Port to the HP fabric.
The connectivity limitations of a metaSAN comprising
HP B-Series, M-Series or McDATA
fabrics are
defined by the scalability of each individual fabric.

Supported platforms and configurations
Connection to McDATA SANs through an FC router is supported for the following hardware platforms:
•
HP StorageWorks 400 MP Router
•
4/256 SAN Director with a B-Series MP Router blade (FR4-18i)

Configuring the fabrics for interconnectivity
When connecting an HP fabric with a McDATA fabric using an FC Router, you must configure the switch on
both fabrics as well as router described in:
