?
■
i-
α
ppli display
An i-
α
ppli can be set to the standby screen,
and you can receive a message or make a
call on the screen. The standby screen can
be more useful; e.g. news or weather infor-
mation can be displayed, or your preferred
character notifies you of an incoming mes-
sage or alarm.

i-mode terminal (e.g. messages, Dialed calls/
Received calls, phonebook entries). i-
α
ppli
can be more useful and enjoyable; e.g. you
can compose a message on the screen with
your preferred character appearing, the char-

3D sound
The stereo speaker (or stereo earphones) on
a 3D sound compatible i-mode terminal pro-
duces a 3 dimensional and resonating sound,
and you can enjoy rich sound of i-
α
ppli
games, ring tones and i-motion programs.
(Only available with 3D sound compatible
content.)
■
Chara-den
When talking on a videophone call, you can
send a cartoon character (“Chara-den” char-
acter) image to the other party’s phone
instead of your own image. You can even
make the “Chara-den” character’s mouth syn-
chronize sounds or move using your phone’s
keypads. You can also download your pre-
ferred character, shoot it as a still image or
movie and set it to the standby screen or
attach it to a message. (You cannot send an
image or movie if it is not allowed to be output
from the FOMA terminal or attached to a
message.)

Infrared data exchange function
i-mode terminal can exchange data such as
phonebook entries, messages and bookmarks
with mobile phones, PCs and other devices
equipped with infrared data exchange func-
tion.*
Use the infrared data exchange function with
an i-
α
ppli, and the i-
α
ppli is linked to a device
equipped with the infrared data exchange
function, which provides a variety of usage
patterns. For example, your mobile phone
can be used as a TV remote control or mem-
ber ID.
*: The FOMA terminal may be unable to
communicate with some devices even if
they are equipped with the infrared data
exchange function.

SSL session
SSL is authentication/encryption technology
to protect your privacy in data transmissions.
Data sent to or received from a SSL page is
encrypted to prevent hackers from eaves-
dropping data, site spoofing* or altering, thus
making credit card transactions and the
sending of personal information (e.g.
address) safer. There are 2 types of SSL
communication. In one, SSL certification
authority (CA) (SSL certificates) stored in an
i-mode terminal are used to display SSL com-
patible sites (SSL pages) without requiring
the user to perform any special procedures.
In the other, user certificates downloaded
from the FirstPass Center are used to display
SSL compatible sites (SSL pages). The type
of certificate used depends on the site.
