- finish equipping the truck with tires of the same size, model, ply rating, pay special atten-
tion to correct fitting of the tires relative to the axles (in terms of wear);
- warm the tires that have been stored at temperatures below 0°С to above-zero temperature
in a warm room;
- wheel rotation direction should coincide with the thread pattern direction;
- rims and their components should not have any defects and bends, cracks, sharp ends and
fins, corrosion both on internal and external surfaces, especially in the area of welds and in the area
where the tire contacts worn clamping holes;
- when fitting a tire in a workshop, check the rim radial and axial play, they should not ex-
ceed 4 mm.
4.3.3.3 Before wheel assembly
check technical state of the tire, tube, tire flap, rim, lock and
bead rings.
Inspect the tire from outside and inside with the help of tire expander and remove foreign
objects (sand, small stones, etc.) from the inside, clean the internal and mounting surfaces of the tire,
repair defects and scores of the beads; flush rubber striations and burrs with the bead base surface.
Face the tire inside, and face tube and rim flap from outside.
To simplify assembly and ensure complete tire seat on the rim mounting surface, it is rec-
ommended to lubricate tire beads with soap solution, glycerine or paraffin. Do not use mineral oils
(cup grease, engine oil, etc.) as a lubricant.
If any manufacturing or operational flaws of the tires are detected, do not fit such tires.
Check tubes and valves for tightness, do not use tubes with delamination on the joints or
damaged valve.
Clean wheel surface from dirt, rust and rubber waste, especially from rim surface, bead and
lock rings facing the tire and in the area of welds. Paint the areas with defective coating with quick-
drying enamel, removing fins and scores before.
Check lock ring seat on the rim or test cylinder of the same diameter:
- backlash between ring ends should be 45-55 mm, and ring ends should be 1.5 mm away
from the rim and up to 50 mm along the arc length;
- local backlashes between the lock ring and the rim should not exceed 1.5 mm, and they
should continuously lessen in both directions on the arc 1/4 of its perimeter maximum;
- twisting (“screw”) of the lock ring should not exceed 15 mm.
If backlashes and twisting of the lock ring exceeds the norms set above, the ring cannot be
assembled and should be planished and crimped or replaced by a new one.
Wheel parts having defective forms, geometry or cracks should also be rejected.
Only proper wheels and tires can be fit (operated).
4.3.3.4 When assembling and disassembling, follow the next safety rules:
- fit and take down the wheel with a tire from the truck hub, when the truck is elevated.
Loosen and tighten wheel retaining nuts when the wheels are down and the truck is braked. Tighten
the nuts finally “in a criss-cross manner”;
