Cross-axle  differential  distributes  torque  equally  between  the  axle  wheels,  including 

truck  driving  on  an  uneven  road  and  on  turns,  when  the  truck  wheels  rotate  with  different  se-
quence. When driving the truck off-road with a big difference of left and right wheels clutch, the 
cross-axle differential can help sliding of one axle wheel.  

So that to improve off-road performance on such roads the cross-axle differentials of the 

intermediate and rear  axles can be locked. When the differentials are locked, the axle shafts  are 
rotating as a unit. 

The  cross-axle  differentials  should  be  locked  in  exceptional  cases  only  on  a  stationary 

vehicle,  when  all  other  measures  to  improve  off-road  performance  have  already  been  taken  (the 
necessary tire pressure is set, the transfer box cross-axle differential lock is switched on).

The differentials are locked by the spline crown on the butt end of the left carrier 7 and 

spline clutch 8 installed on the left axle shaft splines 9. 

The cross-axle differential lock drive of the intermediate and rear axles is electro-

pneumatic. 

To ensure differential lock of the intermediate and rear axles, press switch 21 with

symbol (see figure 25) on the cab dashboard. Herein, pressed air is fed to pneumatic chambers of 
locking devices 2 (see figure 61) and impacting the curtain 1, moves the rod 3. 

The rod trough the connector 11 moves the clutch on the axle shaft splines, clutching it 

with the carrier journal. 

Pneumatic control scheme of the cross-axle differential lock is shown in figure 62.
