Coupling and uncoupling should be done on a horizontal platform with hard surface. Herein, 

longitudinal axes of the tractor and of the semi-trailer should be in line. 

Coupling should be done as follows: 
- make sure that the locking element of the fifth-wheel coupling was completely up, and un-

locking handle was in ready-for-unlocking position as shown in figure 143.

- clean the area between the tractor and the semi-trailer; 
- reverse the tractor at low speed to the semi-trailer in a way that the semi-trailer king pin 

entered the grips of the fifth-wheel coupling. The tractor and the semi-trailer are coupled automat-
ically;  

- brake the tractor with the parking brake. Make sure that accidental uncoupling interlock 2 

(see figure 141) is down and prevents the handle move towards itself; 

- lift the semi-trailer support in the extreme up position and fix it securely; 
- plug in the connecting cable of the semi-trailer wiring; 
- connect the connection hoses of the tractor pneumatic brake system drive to the coupling 

heads; 

- release the semi-trailer parking brake; 
-  move  the  road-train  for  some  distance,  make  sure  that  the  coupling  is  secure,  that  the 

brake and the semi-trailer electric gauges are properly functioning.
