Consider Network Protocol Limitations
The following sections outline the various configuration options the
controller supports as well as any limitations you may encounter.
Decide Whether to Use WINS Servers
The controller supports the WINS host name resolution service. Using a
WINS server is optional but has several advantages, especially if you are
using DHCP to dynamically assign IP Addresses (enabled by default):
Users can refer to the device by its name instead of its IP address.
Users do not have to look up the currently assigned IP address every
time they want to access the embedded web server.
It simplifies command line printing for LPR/LPD clients.
Determine the Printing Mode
Microsoft Print Modes
The controller supports the following Microsoft print services modes:
Peer to Peer (NetBIOS on TCP/IP and IPX/SPX)
Controller-Supported Protocols
Protocol
Considerations and Limitations
TCP/IP
• Required to manage the device using Printer Utility.
• Required for LPD printing.
• If you are using DHCP for IP address acquisition, which may assign different IP
addresses to the controller, consider setting up WINS servers for host name reso-
lution.
• Imagistics does not support running the controller as a print server in a Novell
environment over IP. However, you can use the controller as a printer agent if you
set up NDPS printing.
IPX/SPX
• Running the controller as a print server in a Novell environment is supported only
over IPX/SPX. NetWare 5.x and 6.x default to TCP/IP and must be reset to use
IPX/SPX if you want to use the controller in this way.
• The frame type is set to
Auto Sense
by default. To optimize the controller for your
network, you may want to set the frame type yourself.
AppleTalk
• The controller supports all Macintosh computers that use AppleShare, which
includes all workstations running version 6.0.7 (or later) operating system, except
for the Macintosh XL and 128K.
