Internetwork Packet Exchange (IPX) Protocol
Overview of ipx mode
A port set to ipx mode allows only FastLink or FastLink II dial-in access. This is the most restrictive
of the IPX port modes. If an ipx port receives a packet whose protocol is anything other than IPX,
it discards the packet and hangs-up on the user. Use this mode if:
•
You want to restrict the port to IPX usage.
•
You want to configure/manage the port using na or admin.
•
You do not need proprietary IPX dial-out or routing functions.
In Figure A9-4, the Model 5390 server is connected to (and thereby becomes part of) the Novell
network shown inside dotted lines. This network supports two PCs and a file server in addition to
the Model 5390 server. If Model 5390 ports 4 and 11 are set to ipx mode, the two remote workstations,
PC3 and PC4, can use FastLink II to log into the Novell network and access its file server, just as
if the PCs were attached to the network directly. The connections between the PCs and the Model
5390 server can be leased lines or regular phone lines. To configure this type of port, see Configuring
ipx-mode Ports and Modems on page A9-23.
