About the Dual-Core Intel
®
81342 I/O Processor
The 81342 2-core is a single-PCI device that integrates two Intel XScale
®
processors
with intelligent peripherals including a PCI bus application bridge. 81342 2-core also
supports two internal busses: North internal bus and South internal bus. With the two
internal busses, transactions can take place simultaneously on each bus. The north
internal bus provides the two Intel XScale
®
processors with low latency access to either
the DDR SDRAM Memory Controller, and the on-chip SRAM Memory Controller.
Peripherals that generate large burst transactions are located on the south internal bus,
thus allowing the two Intel XScale
®
processors exclusive access to the north internal
bus.
The 81342 2-core consolidates, into a single system:
• Two Intel XScale
®
processors running at speed up to 1.5 GHz
• PCI - Local Memory Bus Address Translation Unit
• Messaging Unit, function 0 programming interface
• Inter-Processor Communication
• Inter-Processor Messaging Unit
• Application Direct Memory Access (DMA) Controllers
• Peripheral Bus Interface Unit
• Integrated DDR2 Memory Controller
• Integrated SRAM Memory Controller
• Performance Monitor (

)

• Internal North Bus-South Bus Bridge
It is an integrated processor that addresses the needs of intelligent I/O Storage
applications and helps reduce intelligent I/O system costs.
The 81342 2-core support both a PCI-X 2.0 and a PCI Express interface. The PCI Bus is
an industry standard, high performance, low latency system bus. The 81342 2-core’s
PCI Bus is capable of 133 MHz operation in PCI-X 2.0 mode as defined by the PCI-X
Addendum to the PCI Local Bus Specification, Revision 1.0a. Also, the processor
supports a 66 MHz conventional PCI mode as defined by the PCI Local Bus
Specification, Revision 2.2. The addition of the Intel XScale
®
processors bring
intelligence to the PCI bus application bridge. The 81342 2-core supports a x8 PCI
Express interface as defined by the PCI Express Specification, Revision 1.0.
The 81342 2-core is a single-function PCI device at reset. The host programming
interface is presented as the Address Translation Unit (ATU) and the Messaging Unit
(MU). The MU provides the messaging interface between the host processor and the
81342 2-core.
Both the address and data busses on the 81342 2-core south internal bus are byte-wise
parity protected.
