a.
Remove the base studs, but be careful not to damage the leads on the ion source
board.
b. Gently pull the ion source board from the ion source by sliding the cartridge heaters
and temperature sensor out of the ion source and pulling the filament away from the
3-pin filament connector located on the ion source board.
c.
Remove the filament retainer clip.
d. Remove the filament.
13. Verify that the wire on the new filament is centered in the electron lens
hole. If it is not, carefully use forceps to adjust the wire.
14. Insert the filament into the ion source. Normally, there is a small gap
(about 0.020 in.) between the filament and the connectors. The gap
allows the ceramic filament spacer centering ring to properly position
and align the electron lens hole with the ion volume.
15. Ensure the bottom of the filament’s outer shield does not touch the ion source.
16. Reassemble the ion source and its surrounding components.
a.
Insert the filament retainer clip.
b. Gently insert the ion source board into the ion source by sliding the cartridge heaters
and temperature sensor into the ion source and pushing the filament into the 3-pin
filament connector located on the ion source board.
c.
Reattach the base studs, but be careful not to damage the leads on the ion source
board.
d. Insert the lens stack.
e.
Attach the source spacer to the ion source.
f.
Reattach the magnet yoke, magnets, and thumbscrews.
17. Reinstall the ion source and its surrounding components back into the DSQ II.
a.
Slip the ion source over the end of the transfer line. Be careful not to damage the
capillary column extending out of the transfer line.
b. Push the source spacer to the right until it snaps into place.
c.
Tighten the two thumbscrews completely.
d. Attach the 3- and 8-pin connectors.
e.
Move the ion source left and right to ensure it is snapped in place. If it does not
move, it is in place. If the ion source is not in its groove properly, it could affect
performance and your ability to insert or remove the ion volume with an inlet valve.
CAUTION - INSTRUMENT DAMAGE.
Do not bend or twist the cartridge heaters or the
temperature sensor.
