Thermo Scientific

Excessive chemical background due to column bleed (

m/z

429, 355, 281).

Possible Solutions

• Capillary column has not been properly conditioned. Condition the capillary column.

• Capillary column is damaged as a result of exposure to oxygen. Find the source of the

oxygen in the carrier gas or air leak. Recondition or replace the capillary column, as
described in

“Preparing the DSQ II for Maintenance”

page 25

• Capillary column is broken off in ion volume. Remove broken pieces from ion volume.

Excessive injection port septum bleed (

m/z

207, 429, 355, 281).

Possible Solutions

• If the Baseline contains these masses, the septum is worn out or damaged. Replace the

septum.

• If the Baseline contains these masses, small pieces of septum are in the injection port liner.

Replace the injection port liner, condition the capillary column.

• If chromatographic peaks contain these masses, check the vial septa or use solvent to wash

the vials.

Phthalate background manifests in chromatograms (

m/z

149, 167, 279).

Possible Solutions

• Phthalate contamination has occurred due to sample handling or solvent contamination.

Phthalates may be observed from packaging materials. Isolate the source of phthalates,
such as vial lids or plastic solvent containers and remedy.

Excessive hydrocarbon contamination manifest in chromatograms (

m/z

43, 57, 71,

85, 99...).

Possible Solutions

• Do not touch these parts without wearing gloves. Oil from your skin can contaminate the

system.

• Carrier gas tubing is contaminated. Isolate source of hydrocarbon contamination and

remedy.

• Replace carrier gas tubing.

• Change carrier gas filters.
