GLOSSARY
Gloss-10
Edition One
XC1000 Service
File.
(1) A logical collection of data that occupies one or more blocks on a mass-storage
device, such as a disk. (2) Logical unit of data that can be referenced by a
logical name, recognized by the voice processor. (3) Group of similar or related
records.
File-allocation table.
See FAT.
Firmware.
Programs residing on EPROMs.
Flash.
A flash is generated by the momentary depression and release of the switch-hook
on a standard telephone set. Computerized PBX and Centrex systems interpret a
switch-hook flash as a signal that a feature request is forthcoming.
Format.
Arrangement of the elements comprising any field, record, file, or volume.
Full-duplex.
A communications channel capable of simultaneous and independent
transmission and reception.
See also Duplex and Half-duplex.
G
Garbage collect.
A two-pass function. The first pass identifies mailboxes with damaged
messages, names, or greetings. The second pass, if chosen, purges damaged
messages, updates the free-space table, and lists the affected mailboxes.
Greeting.
Recorded message identifying the location reached by the caller. This greeting
is the first announcement heard by callers when they reach the voice processor, if
there was no answer from the number dialed. Greetings can be personal or
system greetings.
Ground-bus window.
Large copper frame that is directly connected to the earth, and
holds many connection points for electronic equipment to receive a ground
reference. The ground-bus window is part of a single-point-ground system.
Ground start.
When requesting a dial tone, the PBX, Centrex, or voice processor sends
a momentary ground on the line. The ground is removed when the dial tone is
received. The ring ground returns on the tip.
See also Tip and Ring.
H
Half-duplex.
A communication system in which two-way communication is possible, but
only one way at a time; for example, a ham radio or radio-telephone with a push-
button on the mouthpiece.
See also Duplex and Full-duplex.
Handshake.
Two-way transfer of signaling between a CPU and a peripheral device
requiring each device to inform the other if it is ready or busy when information
transfer is requested.
Hard disk errors.
Errors that cause the disk drive to fail, necessitating replacement of
the disk drive.
See also Soft disk errors.
Hardware.
The physical equipment and components in a voice processor.
HDA (head/disk assembly).
An airtight assembly consisting of a disk pack and
read/write heads, used in a Winchester disk.
