HAYES ULTRA 96 MODEM CONFIGURATION
F.1 IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS
Octel Communications Corporation provides information about peripheral
equipment as a service to its customers. Octel supports remote access for
online upgrades but does not endorse specific modem brands, except the
Hayes ULTRA 96. Octel does not provide service for peripheral equipment
unless that equipment was bought from Octel.
The information described in this document was not certified or tested by
Octel, but our customers have reported that it is correct. Customers are
responsible for modem communication and compatibility, including
installation and maintenance of modem equipment.
Because the remote connection to the voice processor is made through a
dial-up modem, security must be considered. When using a dial-up modem
that has a direct-dial number for access, anyone with a Hayes-compatible
modem can call the voice-processor modem and attempt entry to the SMT.
Therefore, Octel suggests that an extension with no direct outside access be
used for the modem phone line.
Always exercise responsible networking procedures by disconnecting from
the voice processor after each transaction or session. Improper or incom-
plete termination will cause the communication path to remain open and
vulnerable to unauthorized access for approximately 10 minutes. For
additional security, install a black-box interception device that will detect
carrier drop and immediately log out of the SMT port.
F.2 CONFIGURING THE VOICE-PROCESSOR MODEM
The configuration for the voice-processor modem differs from the configura-
tion for the PC modem. The modem directly connected to the voice
processor is configured as a passive device, when possible. The modem is
configured to disable command recognition and result-code generation.
Configure the voice-processor modem as follows:
1. Configure the PC communications program to 9600 baud, 8 bits, no
parity, 1 stop bit, and full-duplex operation.
2. Turn on the modem power switch. Verify that the TR (terminal ready)
and the MR (modem ready) LEDs are lit.
3. From the keyboard, type
AT
and press
Enter
. Depending on the
current modem configuration, either
OK
or
0
appears on the screen.
If either appears, skip to step 7.
4. If nothing appears on the screen
,
watch the RD (receive data) and the
TD (transmit data) LEDs on the front of the modem while typing
AT
E1
and pressing
Enter
. The RD and the TD LEDs should light as the
commands are typed on the keyboard, indicating that the modem is
now configured to echo the keyboard commands. If the LEDs light,
skip to step 7.
