8.4.10.4
Testing the New Drive.
Complete the following steps to test the new
system-drive one:
1. Type
B
at the
ENTER BOOT COMMAND:
prompt to refresh memory,
then type
A
when the boot prompt reappears, to boot the system.
2. Check menu 12 to verify that both system drives are running.
3. Run validity checks (section 8.4.6). Validity checks are required when
replacing system drives.
4. Run garbage collect (section 8.4.7). Although garbage collect is not
required, Octel Communications strongly recommends it.
5. When the
ENTER BOOT COMMAND:
prompt appears, type
^DT
to
enter the drive-test utility. Answer the prompts as follows:
DRIVE TEST: ENTER TYPE (S, M, OR L): L
SINGLE OR CONTINUOUS (S OR C): S
NOTE: DRIVE NUMBERS SHOULD BE SEPARATED BY COMMA (,),
OR HYPHEN (-)
SELECT DRIVE LIST (0-3 OR M0-M7): 1
If the drive test fails, control-bus messages are displayed. Offset 0B of
the CB IN message reports the sector that did not pass the test. For
more details about drive-test inconsistencies and procedures about
what to do if an inconsistency occurs, refer to section 9.6.1.
6. When the drive test is completed successfully, the
ENTER BOOT
COMMAND:
prompt appears.
Enter the copy-option utility by typing
^DC
. Select copy option V –
Verify Drive for Integrity, to perform integrity checks. The verification
operation checks data records on a drive before a copy is performed or
after an unsuccessful copy.
7. Type
B
to reboot the XC1000 and refresh CPU RAM, then
A
to return
it to normal operation.
8. Check menu 12 to verify that the drive is running. Print and then
clear any alarms generated previously by the defective drive. File the
printout.
9. Return the original drive to Octel Communications. Refer to Appendix
B for the correct procedure.
8.4.11 Replacing Message Drives
The only material required to replace a message drive in a XC1000 is the
new drive. The message-copy operation automatically replaces the source-
drive serial number in the install table on the system drives with the new
destination-drive serial number.
Use the procedures in sections 8.4.11.1 through 8.4.11.4 to replace a
message drive. Use the flow chart in Figure 8-17 as a guide. This procedure
requires that the XC1000 be out of service for about 2 hours.
