STARTUP AND INITIALIZATION
4-2
Edition One
XC1000 Service
4.2.1 Turning On the SMT
Perform the following steps to turn on the terminal:
1. Make sure that the terminal is installed correctly and connected to
J50 on the XC1000 distribution board.
2. Press the power button to turn the terminal on. Listen for an immediate
beep, which indicates that there is power to the terminal. Wait for the
cursor to appear in the upper left corner of the screen.
3. Adjust the screen intensity, using the intensity control at the lower
right corner of the video monitor. If the intensity is too bright, selected
fields will not appear highlighted.
4.2.2 Using the SMT Keyboard
The system manager or service technician enters commands or selects menu
options on the SMT keyboard as single keystrokes or combinations of
keystrokes. However, the SMT does not always display a response on the
screen to a keystroke or series of keystrokes. For example, if the
Ctrl
key is
pressed at the same time as the
C
key, followed by the
D
key, only the letter
D
appears on the screen. Some keyboard entries require that the
Enter
key
(or
Return
key on some terminals) be pressed after entering a command or
data string or selecting an option from a menu. Characters can also be
entered on the keyboard as lower case or all capitals. The procedures
throughout this manual indicate when to press the
Enter
key to execute a
command. (The
Return
and
Enter
keys on different keyboards perform the
same function.)
The following conventions are used in this manual for keyboard entries:
-
The
Ctrl
key is always pressed and held down until another key is
pressed, at which time both keys are released. The carat (^) character re-
presents the
Ctrl
key. Thus,
^C
means press the
Ctrl
and then the
C
key.
-
Some commands involve pressing and releasing keys in sequence. For
example,
^DC
represents pressing and holding down the
Ctrl
key, then
pressing the
D
key, releasing both keys, and then pressing the
C
key.
Keys usage for the HP 700/43, Wyse 50, and DEC VT102 and VT220 terminals
is described in the following sections.
4.2.2.1
HP 700/43 or Wyse 50 Keyboard.
The HP 700/43 or the Wyse 50
terminal has a standard alphanumeric keyboard, several special-purpose
keys, and 16 programmable function keys. Before using the terminal,
become familiar with how to use the following keys:
-
Function keys F1 through F16.
XC1000 only uses
F1
through
F8
.
If the keys are not programmed for other functions, pressing any one
of these keys calls up a help message for the current data-entry field
in a system management menu. (The current data-entry field is
defined as the area in which the cursor is located.) View the help
message at the bottom of the screen.
