Centrex.
The software and hardware located in the Central Office (CO) to provide PBX
service to a customer, eliminating the need for PBX equipment on the customer
site.
Certified service engineers.
Service engineers who have successfully completed the
Octel Communication’s training program for service personnel. By passing an
examination, they become certified to service Octel products.

Character. A single letter, numeral, or symbol used to represent information.
Checksum. A standard error-detection technique for messages. Both the sender and
the receiver add up the values in a message. If the sum of the bits do not
match, there has been an error in transmission. The system responds by sending
the message again.
CIP (compact integration protocol). An Octel-proprietary protocol used by the optional
ACP feature to communicate with the voice processor.
CI (critical-indicator) channel. A one-way interface that provides circuitry to connect
the XC1000 to a Switching Control Center, where alarm conditions can be
visually displayed.
Class of service. See COS.
CO (central office). Telephone-company term for its switching office. It is the connec-
tion point for public telephones and switching equipment for trunks that provide
the necessary talk-path connections.
CO Ground. In a telephone office, the common point to which all grounding paths in
the CO are connected electrically. Physically, it consists of a copper bus bar. In
telephone buildings of more than one floor, a CO-ground bus bar is provided on
each floor. These bus bars are connected by a vertical ground riser consisting of
a copper cable or bus bar of large cross-section.
Command. A word, mnemonic, or character that, by virtue of its syntax in a line of
input, causes a predefined operation in a computer system. A word or phrase,
usually in a menu, describing an action to be performed by the voice processor.
Common-channel signaling. See CCS.
Communication path. (1) The physical link used for transmitting data between the data
module and a voice processor. The communication path can be used for SMT
emulation on the data module or for data transmission using X.25 protocol.
(2) Attributes of the physical link defined in software.
Compact integration protocol. See CIP.
Configuration. (1) Manner in which a computer and peripheral equipment are intercon-
nected and programmed to operate as a system. (2) A particular selection of
hardware devices or software routines or programs that function together.
Configuration notes. Documents produced by Octel Communications that contain
details pertaining to the different integrations of the voice processor and the
telephone system.
Configuration parameters. The parameters that define several system-wide variables,
including system manager mailboxes, mailboxes designated general message
mailboxes, number of digits in a password, and bad password attempts before
disconnect.
