Data set.
Alternative term for a modem. See also Modem.
Data-terminating equipment. See DTE.
DB25 connector. A connector with either 25 pins (male) or 25 slots (female). Most
commonly used with an EIA-232D interface connection.
DCE (data circuit-terminating equipment). Equipment that provides the signal
conversion and coding between data-terminal equipment (DTE) and the transmis-
sion line. The DCE can perform other functions that are normally performed at
the network end of the user-to-network interface.
Default. Value assigned by the program or the voice processor when another value has
not been specified by the user.
Deletion notification. Message generated by the voice processor informing subscribers
that messages were deleted from their mailboxes because the messages exceeded
the time limits for message storage specified in the subscriber class of service.
This feature can be enabled or disabled by the system manager.
Diagnostics . A computer program that attempts to detect faults in various parts of the
system when the system is first started after power is applied. Diagnostic
messages are often automatically recorded as status codes in a status log that
contains information about conditions that occur in the system.
Dialing sequences. Sequence of alphanumeric characters required by the voice proces-
sor to transfer calls to an attendant or specific extension or to place a message-
notification outcall.
Dial-by-name table. A feature of the voice processor that allows callers to access a
subscriber’s mailbox by using the telephone keypad to dial the name of the
subscriber.
DID (direct inward dial). (1) Trunk from the CO that provides direct access to a
telephone extension. DIDs are generally purchased in blocks of 100 extension
numbers from the telephone company. (2) Permits a caller to reach an extension
on a PBX or Centrex without the assistance of an operator.
Digital. Pertains to quantities with discrete or discontinuous values. See also analog.
Digital Line Card. See DLC.
Digital signal. A series of pulses or rapidly changing voltage levels that vary in discrete
steps or increments. See also analog signal.
Digital Signal Processor. See DSP.
Digital-to-analog converter. Circuitry that changes digitally encoded data into an
analog signal. See also Analog-to-digital converter.
DIP or dip (dual in-line package) switches . Small switches found on the logic cards
and boards that are used to set up or configure the equipment. The two
positions for the microswitches are ON and OFF. The combination of switches
that are ON and those that are OFF determines the configuration.
Direct connection. A physical communication link that is permanently connected, used
for data communication. The physical link usually cannot be longer than 50 feet.
