7. The DLC compresses the digitized voice samples using digital signal
processing (DSP) cells. The DSP cells assemble the digitized voice
samples into data records.
8. The CPU sets up a data-bus transfer between the DLC and the
message-file card. The message-file card selects a message drive and
address to store the message.
9. The DLC sends the compressed voice data over the data bus to the
message-file card, which writes the data onto the selected message
drive.
10. The message-file card sends the following information to the CPU: the
location of the message on the disk, caller identification, and the time,
priority, and length of the message. The CPU updates the user record
of the subscriber with this information through the system-file card.
11. The caller disconnects from XC1000 by hanging up or pressing a
disconnect key. The DLC detects the caller disconnect or the discon-
nect command, forces the line to the idle state, and notifies the CPU
using a control bus message.
12. The CPU instructs the DLC to go on-hook and disconnect the line.
The DLC disconnects the line and continues polling all TIC ports for a
change of status.

The hot-plug capability allows service personnel to replace existing
DLCs and TICs while the XC1000 is on-line.
Three power-distribution circuit breakers are provided for +5 Vdc, +12
Vdc, and –48 Vdc.
The CPU, monitor card, file cards, DLCs, and TICs plug into the main
backplane.
