7. Return the original drive to Octel Communications. Refer to Appendix
B for the Return Material Authorization (RMA) procedure.
8. Return the XC1000 to service.
16.4.2 Replace Message Drives
Use this utility to copy messages from a malfunctioning drive to a replace-
ment drive. The replacement drive must be the same size as or larger than
the original drive. Perform the following steps to replace a message drive:
16.4.2.1
Take the XC1000 Out of Service.
Perform the following steps to take the
XC1000 out of service:
1. Use menu 13.1 to shut down the XC1000.
2. Turn off power to the XC1000. Wait approximately 30 to 60 seconds,
until the drives have spun down.
3. Record the slot numbers and serial numbers of all message drives
involved, so that the serial numbers can be verified and the XC1000
properly reconfigured at the end of the procedure.

Copy Messages to the Replacement Drive.
Complete the following steps
to copy messages to the replacement drive:
1. Clearly label the message drive that will be replaced.

permanent marker of any kind to label a drive.
2. Clearly label the replacement message drive.

3. Insert the replacement drive in system-drive slot 3 or any open
message-drive slot (M0 through M6).
4. Turn on the power to the XC1000. At the

5. From menu 20, type the corresponding menu-item number at the
Enter Choice:
prompt to access the Drive Replacement Utilities
option.
6. From the Drive Replacement Utilities menu (Figure 16-18), type the
corresponding menu-item number at the

access the Replace Message Drive utility.
7. When the
Enter position of drive to be replaced [M0–M6]:

appears, enter the number of the malfunctioning drive.
8. At the
