Edition One
XC1000 Service
During the XC1000 reboot, the active CPU displays switchover-status
information on the XC1000 SMT, similar to the screen shown in Figure
11-5. The status information includes the cause of the shutdown, identifi-
cation of the active card set, any boot failures that might have occurred,
and any of the monitor- card timers that might have been disabled by
hardware switch settings. Status-code messages, described in section 7.3,
provide status information about standby redundancy.

The monitor card acts as a watchdog for the XC1000, determining which
card set is active. The monitor card also maintains configuration informa-
tion from the active CPU and controls the switchover action. The monitor
card is not redundant. The monitor card maintains a runtime timer to
check the CPU. If the monitor card does not receive a message from the
CPU within 2 minutes, the switchover to the standby card set occurs. The
monitor card also guards against boot failures by monitoring the length of
time the boot process takes. If the monitor card does not receive a signal
within 30 minutes, the switchover to the standby card set occurs.
To ensure consistent system information on both sets of cards, the active
CPU card sends a copy of its system parameters to the monitor card every
hour and before shutting down during a software-controlled shutdown
(menu 13.1). When a new card set is activated after reboot, the monitor
card overwrites the data on the newly active CPU. This action ensures that
a newly active CPU does not alter system configuration.
The design of the Standby-Redundancy feature allows cards to be removed
and replaced without taking the XC1000 out of service. For example, if the
XC1000 detects a problem on the active message-file card and switches
over to the standby card set, the faulty file card can be removed and
replaced while the XC1000 remains operational. Full diagnostics are
performed on the file card to ensure that the card is functioning properly
before another switchover can occur.
