INM Broadband Release 4.1
PG OC 98-13
Issue 1.2
Snap Grid enhancement
A Snap Grid capability is being introduced in INM Release 4.1 in order to
facilitate the alignment of network elements in the GNE. This is a task that
GNE users often perform in order to make perfectly straight vertical or
horizontal links. Links that are almost-but-not-quite straight often look sloppy
and degrade the visual quality of the layout of network elements.
The Snap Grid capability being provided in INM 4.1 is very similar to that
used in many other third party applications such as MS Word. When activated,
the Snap Grid forces mouse events to occur at specific locations. The mouse
events are aligned with an invisible grid of evenly-spaced screen positions. In
reality, an invisible grid with magnetic-like qualities is created that "snaps" the
positions of network objects to the grid. For example, when a network element
is being dragged while the snap grid is activated, the network element "ghost"
will automatically align to the grid position that is closest to the current mouse
pointer position.
The INM 4.1 Snap Grid feature has the following characteristics:
•
The Snap Grid is always off when the GNE is first started up.
•
The Snap Grid can be turned on or off at any time by using the "Snap Grid"
menu toggle in either the Options menu or the object menu.
•
When turned on or off, the Snap Grid is activated/deactivated for all GNE
windows.
•
If turned on, the Snap Grid is applied to all user interactions including:
- drag and drop of NEs and groups
- creating or editing groups of all types
The Snap Grid intervals define the spacing of the invisible grid in the X and Y
directions. They can be customized via the Preferences dialog (in the GNE
only). These interval settings are saved with the view's preferences so that each
view can have its own Snap Grid interval settings (the default Snap Grid
interval settings are X:10 Y:10).
Note: The Snap Grid feature has absolutely no effect on any GNB user
operations. In addition, the Snap Grid interval fields are not shown in the
GNB Preferences dialog.
